To eat banana with my curry?

DH is fuming with me because he spent 2 hours making a delicious curry and I chopped a few slices of banana as an accompaniment to mine. He said he was offended and I was being disrespectful because of the effort he put into makIng it.

I know this sounds ridiculous but we're actually not talking to each other over this.

It was a chicken and lentil curry. Very delicious.

I originally added banana to DD's portion to take some of the chilli heat out of it. DH didn't have a problem with that. But when I tasted hers, it was soooo delicious I had to add some to mine too. Should have seen his face. You'd have thought I'd just dropped my knickers and farted on the curry

It's a very 70's thing to do, my mum always served banana with her homemade curries too. Like you say, a throw back from colonial times, which has largely died out over the past 20 or 30 years. So, yanbu.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/11/2009 22:34

I have never ever heard of bananas with curry. I'm never sure whether I'm stepping into the real world or not when I read things here!
Perhaps they are supposed to be plantains and people got them muddled?

5inthebed · 21/11/2009 22:35

I used to like strawberries dipped in curry, but I was pregnant at the time

Your DH is BU though, your choice what you eat.

Sassybeast · 21/11/2009 22:38

I can categorically state that my local curry house does the most amazing malayan chicken curry which contains banana and pineapple

ineedalifelaundry · 21/11/2009 22:39

No badkitten they didn't get muddled with plantains. Banana is the perfect mild and sweet antidote to hot curry and compliments the taste really well. I suppose it is a 70's throwback - my mum used to do it too which is of course where I got it from.

Well twas a theory I like my curry hot!

theworldsgoneDMmad · 21/11/2009 22:42

My favourite pregnancy craving was chicken tikka masala with banana... and cheese

Jamstar · 21/11/2009 22:47

Banana is an entirely inappropriate accompaniment to a curry, in my opinion.

My husband disagrees.

He thinks my opinion myopic. We are not talking now.

bogie · 21/11/2009 22:49

Banana with curry Weird

But totally your choice can't see why it would upset you dh.

Divatheshopaholic · 21/11/2009 22:50

some people add bananas in curry,
when you eat curry out, then you may be eating banans in too

Squishabelle · 21/11/2009 22:57

I can understand having banana cooked with the curry but to have it as a side dish is the weirdest thing I ever heard!

juneybean · 21/11/2009 22:58

My dad always used to offer a banana with curry incase it was too hot for me, apparently the banana takes away the heat?

letsblowthistacostand · 21/11/2009 23:29

DH says sounds quite delicious.

I say Urgh but wouldn't bother me in the slightest if someone else wanted it. DH feels the need to add hot sauce every time I make a stir fry, who cares really?

DontHauntMeBaby · 21/11/2009 23:51

Ah, reminds me of the late 70s and 80s, when my parents ate curry but it was too sophisticated for me and my brother ... despite the fact theirs was served with banana, salted peanuts, hard boiled egg and raisins. Possibly cucumber and tomato too? I used to do the accompaniments for them at one point, but it's a loooong time ago ...

That aside, your DH should think himself lucky you're not eating crisps within five minutes of consuming his homemade masterpiece, and you should consider yourself lucky that he cooks. Not that I'm bitter or anything.

(banana = boaktastic in all contexts btw, but I recognise I'm in a minority there)

BoysAreLikeDogs · 21/11/2009 23:58

My parents lived in Asia in the 60's

My mum still likes banana slices, laid around the perimeter of her curry plate, overlapped tarte tatin-stylee, as an addition to her curry

Morloth · 22/11/2009 14:57

I like plum jam with curry. Haven't tried bananas (except in a katsu curry sauce), will give it a go.
