Quite right - they do forget you're there! My niece once posted 'I hate my fucking mother' and I commented 'Oh really, why?' - she was quite shamefaced, poor love.

I would like to be able to cull morons from life, but apparently this is "murder" - who knew you couldn't kill someone for being bloody stupid?!

lovechoc · 18/11/2009 18:33

ohhh I'm so glad I don't use FB!

VengefulSinner · 18/11/2009 19:59

ROFL @ Morloth!!!

chegirl · 18/11/2009 20:50

CJ I had a very unpleasant moment when a nephew (wont call him Dear) posted topless pics of his girlfriend

shockers · 18/11/2009 21:12

Having read through this thread, I thought I would check FB. These are status updates by two different nephews both age 21...

" X has decided to rename methanogenic bacteria, farting bacteria... they suck lol"

and

" Katie Price fukkin me off already x"

Have to confess, I don't understand what either of them is talking about

Yuletidespamlog · 19/11/2009 17:57

Morloth -

Didn't know moron was Welsh for carrot though!

Is it just me that doesn't understand anyone finding the word "offensive"?

"Moron - idiot: a person of subnormal intelligence" - exactly what I meant?!

TotalChaos · 19/11/2009 18:06

having a child with special needs who has had to have formal intelligence tests by a psychologist, it can feel like less of a jolly jape to see terms bandied about that were traditionally used for those with low IQs/learning difficulties. Personally - I'm not bothered by the term idiot/moron as they have evolved - but can see why others might be.

Miggsie · 19/11/2009 18:10

Is Facebook turning us all into the cyber equivalent of peeping Toms?

And are alll these people who post everything up on Facebook the cyber equivalent of flashers?

chegirl · 19/11/2009 19:49

I dont find the word moron in itself offensive. I do feel a bit upset about people of subnormal intelligence and low IQ etc being assumed to be moronic. I know that technically the definition is the same but its not really the point.

Moronic (now) means unpleasantly stupid/ignorant etc.

People with low IQs do not fit into this category any more or less than Mensa members do.

Really, honestly not trying to be offended or starting a ruck. Its just 'low IQ' is a pretty sensitive subject for some of us.

Yuletidespamlog · 19/11/2009 22:34

chegirl, I work with young adults with learning difficulties so can understand it being a sensitive subject.

I honestly had no clue as to the origins of the word so did not mean to cause any offence (apologies to anyone who was offended).

I thought I was being quite mild, censoring some of the terms that went through my mind. I don't quite know how to express the term "thick as pig shit" while remaining "PC".....

Sibella1 · 19/11/2009 22:42

Talking about youngsters - this is the latest of a daughter of a friend of mine (friend herself is wise enough to be technology challenged): 'oh my gash,y is evry1 breaking up on FB,its almst 5 couples in one week....damn......!?!?! ;-o...*'

or this one:

...mis sussalief bajajaja... Strkte mt ju xams!xoxomwaah*

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 19/11/2009 22:49

Sibella...???????? at the second one...'oh my gash' is a bit gross too - gash is fanny!

Sibella1 · 19/11/2009 22:58

Sorry I did not give the full picture - the second one is from the same girl but is written in Afrikaans (they are South African).

Translated in proper English it means:

'Miss sister love very very very much... Good luck with your exams. xoxoxo (kisses?) mwaah (the sound you make when you give a fake kiss - mwah mwah!!)'

In proper Afrikaans it would read:

Mis sussie liefde baie. Sterkte met jou eksamens. Liefde en soentjies.

CJCregg · 19/11/2009 23:04

My nephew has just announced to the world via facebook that he likes 'girl, bum and pie.' Then he changed it to 'I like girls and pie. Not bum.'

He's a student, and is probably shitfaced. I couldn't resist a comment, though, just to remind him I am here ...

chegirl · 20/11/2009 13:57

yule i wasnt offended by your use of the word moron .

GoldenSnitch · 20/11/2009 14:20

While working for a large high street bank, pre DS, I once had to delete someones middle name from their account.

The user had requested this change as she'd gotten a bit of stick in the office for having 'Moron' as a middle name!!

My friend has a T-shirt which reads "1f u c4n r34d th15 u r34lly n33d t0 g37 l41d" which always amuses me

Yuletidespamlog · 20/11/2009 23:40

Glad about that chegirl, I was baffled as to why anyone would be at first, all clear and understood now

PixiNanny · 21/11/2009 01:01

I'm 20, people my age who write like this embarrass me! I delete most of them however keep one or two! My cousin is one of those, he's 17/18 and is always going on about his gorjus grlfrend in his updates. I just hid him

On the babies thing, my friend posts pictures of her baby and loads of girls we went to school with comment with "Oooh! Lovvers! I member mine @ tht age!!!!11!"
Don't know how she puts up and responds to those comments, she's a librarian and hates badly written things!
