or at least admits to it.

Here it is, in Montana:

"In some jurisdictions, public roads have no speed limits:

The German intercity autobahns, two-thirds of which have only advisory limits (Richtgeschwindigkeit); German law on such roads is the equivalent of "reasonable and prudent."
The Isle of Man has no speed limit on many rural roads. A 2004 proposal for 70 and 60 mph (113 and 96 km/h) speed limits was very unpopular,[1] although measured travel speeds are often low. The Isle instead relies on prosecution of drivers for behaviour that is genuinely dangerous, under the conditons, to keep its roads safe.
Montana, United States has had a speed limit since June 1999 (see Montana speed limit). Montana's fatality rate reached its lowest when there was no speed law, from January to May 1999. Fatalities doubled after a speed limit was enforced.[25] Australia's Northern Territory had no blanket speed limits outside major towns until January 2007, when rural speed limits were reduced to 110 km/h or 130 km/h.[26]"

fembear · 17/11/2009 10:31

"This is a problem which can only be addressed by better driver training in the first place though."

I'm not sure about that. How about putting points on your licence for every accident where you are at fault?- that might concentrate peoples' minds. I am appalled at the number of people (especially Company drivers) who have an accident and shrug it off with "never mind, that's why you have insurance"

fembear · 17/11/2009 10:34

Briliant, rhubarb, excellent googling.

Rhubarb · 17/11/2009 10:38

Thank you fembear!

But it's part of a wider psychology that states if you introduce rules, a person then becomes tempted to break them.

Where was that city who took away all road signs and markings and left cars to judge for themselves? People predicted chaos but once again, drivers were more aware of their responsibilites and accident rates were lowered.

I'm not saying we should do without speed restrictions at all, but it's interesting to note that if you take away a speed limit, it removes that limit from the focus of the driver and they instead focus on the road more and their own driving.

AitchTwoToTangOh · 17/11/2009 10:55

haven't ever been to the IoM but i can state with some certainty that you will never in this country meet road conditions similar to montana and australia's northern territory....

Yes, would admit to speeding as usually set the cruise control to mid 70s and depending onthe general speed of the motorway traffic maybe a little higher BUT I'd say I try to keep a good distance away and on motorways thats one of my main concerns I mean you don't even have to be tested on driving on motorways (practicle). Average speed cameras are are very good way to force people to reduce the speeds.

What still amazes me are the number of people that still use a mobile 'phone - so have much more limted control and get more easily distracted. Some white van driver lst week was on mobile and had a fag in other hand to whilst being very close to my rear end .

Seededbiatch · 17/11/2009 11:19

I don't anymore! I've just forked out £60 and got 3 points on my licence for having done so. I got caught, have learnt my lesson and don't want to get caught and fined again.

Rhubarb · 17/11/2009 11:22

Ah now here it is, the town with no road signs is Bohmte in Germany and the scheme has proved to be extremely successful.

SDD, yes I see that a lot too, drivers chatting away on their mobile phones whilst going round a roundabout, women doing their make-up in the mirror etc. ds got a proper police baseball cap from our ex-neighbour in France and I keep it in the car. When I see someone on the phone I'm tempted to put the cap on. Probably illegal I know, but it's just sooooo tempting!

Rhubarb · 17/11/2009 11:23

Seededbiatch, will you only obey the law because you were fined? Or do you think about any possible consequences of your speeding?

KnackeredOldHag · 17/11/2009 11:42

Oh, don't get me started on people using mobile phones when driving. I hate that - but that's another topic entirely.

Tortington · 17/11/2009 11:45

I don't speed, I don't drink and i don't fucking swear [hic]

Rhubarb · 17/11/2009 11:54

Oi Custy, did your ds get his birthday card? Did you see him on his birthday? Is he doing alright?

Tortington · 17/11/2009 12:01

yes we did. tyvm, much appreciated. All the kids agreed it was a much better card than MILs

his personal circs are about the same, he seems happy enough, he isn't recieving any money from the dole ( good!) although they are living off her student grant at the mo.

he isn't too poor to work yet, his rent still gets paid and he refused to take some food from me ( I can't help it!) so he must be ok.

DH refuses to visit his "squalid shithole" and he doesn't make much effort to come here. However he did give us both big hugs at recieving a gift voucher for HMV!

Rhubarb · 17/11/2009 12:04

Aw, if I'd have thought I could have got him a voucher from B&Q, as a hint.

Not spoken to you for ages, will have to ring you so we don't end up hijacking threads like this.

Tortington · 17/11/2009 12:11

fuck it - they're only mumsnetters - they got shit all else to do except eat bisuits and leave their kids to eat the crumbs

wish you could come to the xmas do

Rhubarb · 17/11/2009 12:14

I haven't seen the Christmas Do thread, where is it?
But no. Every Christmas I think that next Christmas we'll be better off, and every bloody Christmas we seem to be getting more and more skint!

Logistically I could go, but I wouldn't fancy getting a night train back and I really can't afford to stop over.

Rhubarb · 17/11/2009 12:15

Bet they only eat homemade biscuits too.

HobNobs on Mumsnet would be for the working classes who can't make their own.

I do speed from time to time, on a motorway (when not stuck in a traffic jam)

however I feel that the quality of driving here is appaulling, the speed is an issue but the general lack of respect is hideous,

the other thing that TOTALLY gets on my tits is people like my FiL who drives everywhere at 45mph, in a 60, on a motorway and in a 30.

also why do people drive in the overtaking lane when they aren't over taking???????

sherby · 17/11/2009 12:50

I have to disagree with the standard of driving. I think that compared with other european countries we are very courteous to each other.

You can stand at a crossing for ages in France before somebody stops for you or lets you out of a side road.

I think that we have a LOT of cars on our roads and the traffic doesn't help with the average stress levels.

I would never speed in a built up or residential area, but I do think a motorway at is different if you are keeping a decent gap between you and the car in front.

The average speed cameras on the M25 are a bitch at the moment

Tortington · 17/11/2009 13:52

I know this is an old thread, but I've just been on the speed awareness course which was really good (you still pay the fine but go on the course rather than get points). Having been driving for over 20 years, it was a really useful refresher. Shame they can't offer it for free without you having to speed first
