Oh, I'll believe you, Morloth. But I think this was more about quota-filling for the cop in question. He was lurking at the bottom of a hill and chased me. Grrr.

Oblomov · 15/11/2009 17:13

Mitch, Actually truth is I prob do 80- 90 when say going to my mums, for amny junctions on the M4 and the roads are clear'ish.
Once again, I don't think I am alone.

Jedward · 15/11/2009 17:16

MarthaFarquhar · 15/11/2009 17:17

I speed on the motorway - 80, 85 or so.

That said, I do not speed in town, nor text, park obstructively (my pet bugbear and this contributes to lots of minor accidents). Nor do I drink a drop of alcohol if I'm driving that at all day. No points on licence.

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/11/2009 17:18

i have been known to

but on motorways etc not in built up areas (if that makes it any better)

i got 3points and £60 fine 2 years ago for doing 81 on a motorway

still dont think 81 is that bad, but there you go

i am more careful/aware of trying to keep to speed limit - if i got more points then i would lose my license and wouldnt have a job

Jedward · 15/11/2009 17:20

You are alone Jedward.

[irony]

I can get away with speeding because the rozzers let me off.
I am the star of their motorbike display team.
I go atop the pyramid and throw shapes.

TheFallenMadonna · 15/11/2009 17:29

I do try never to speed in a 30 limit. The ghastly ads are right. Hitting someone at 35 even is different to hitting them at 30. I rarely speed on single carriageways. I do speed on motorways and dual carriageways - probably up to about 80.

Arsed · 15/11/2009 17:29

I speed on the motorway, 80 or 85 maybe. Never speed in built up areas.

Clean license.

Never had points.

Will take the 5th on whether I ever speed.

Quattrofangs · 15/11/2009 17:38

I'm not going to admit to the number of times I have been caught speeding, because it is embarassing.

But the most embarassing thing is, that my speeding is totally and utterly inadvertent. I drive a lot and often in unfamiliar places, so I don't know the speed limits.

The issue is that I find it quite hard to work out some speed limits, because they're not terribly logical. For instance there is a stretch of the A1, somewhere in Nottinghamshire, where the speed limit is 50. The road looks as though the speed limit should be 70, and it looks identical to the stretch before it - where the limit is 70 - and the stretch after it - which is also 70. Go figure.

Jedward · 15/11/2009 17:39

what I find is annoying is that the police say " have oyu any reason why we stopped you" ( not ME - the offender) which i think is blardy cheeky, one day will resist the urge to say "No you tell me" if they do me.

The police have always let me off whenever they've stopped me. Which is jolly nice of them. It's impossible to charm cameras though.

Ladyanonymous · 15/11/2009 17:43

Oh yea....forgot to add...my b/f is a policeman .....

Jedward · 15/11/2009 17:44

mate of mine was lost in a nearby town late at night
police followed her meandering car

said to her "When did you last have a drink"

she said" hmm about a month ago"

they didnt bother breathalising her!

dh had 9 points at one stage which was a bit concerning but we are in speed camera central here and 3 points were for going through a red (which I thought he might get out of given that the traffic light was new and the light was one of those filter jobbies (you know the ones where it sort of points up so as not to confuse the other line of traffic except this one was pointing in the wrong direction)

anyway, they have all expired now so we are back to clean licences

I thought I got done on the A3 the other day. Had been stuck for 45 mins in heinous traffic in the wandsworth one way system, came up west hill in 1st and there's one TEENY TINY stretch of road before you hit the next intersection and continue your journey in 1st gear (it's probably only 500m) and I put my foot down in pure frustration at being stuck in traffic for so long and was definitely doing more than 40mph when some traffic cop leaned over from behind the bridge and lasered me . Wasn't pulled over though and was already back at 10mph

we aren't natural speeders though, especially in built up areas. Open roads like Mways we sometimes do go over 70mph I guess.

ChasingSquirrels · 15/11/2009 17:59

I don't speed in speed limited areas (or I try very very hard not to, and would say that 95% of the time I don't).
I do speed in national speed limit areas, upto about 80mph.

TrillianAstra · 15/11/2009 18:00

I don't speed on MN.

MNing takes a lot of attention so can only be done if you're driving quite slowly

foxinsocks · 15/11/2009 18:10

lol trillian

Shineon - need more info re parking on a pelican crossing!
did you not see it?
sorry I have a funny picture in my head of you obliviously parking and strolling away.

groundhogs · 15/11/2009 18:37

Riven, good points, to add to them, I'll say the following:

I'm aghast at the glib nature and hand waving on speeding in built-up areas on this thread. Perhaps those of you who don't yet 'get it' need to see it explained another way...

Hit anyone above 25mph and you will, more likely than not, kill them...

It takes 75ft to stop at 30 mph.

It takes 105ft to stop at 40mph.

Therefore if you are driving at 40mph in a 30 zone, a child runs out 75ft ahead of you,

You slam on the brakes...

You will STILL hit them at 29mph.... probably killing them instantly.

Who in their right mind would, at 30mph in a 30 zone, merely lift their foot off the accelerator pedal when a child runs in front of them? This realistically is what only being able to reduce your to 29mph effectively equates to.

This is a parenting site, for all of you that have said you'll try to slow down, imagine what excuse you'll tell the parent of the child you may kill? Or what excuse you would find acceptable if it were your DC killed?

Please DON'T speed in 30 mph zones.
