I hate this, it really winds me up....

Hulababy · 11/11/2009 21:21

Ah - they are just excited.

Even they know that he isn't pregnant, but they are both having a baby.

ClaireDeLoon · 11/11/2009 21:23

I don't like this phrase either, thought it was just me. Always makes me think of the smug marrieds off the Bridget Jones film - where bloke is rubbing wife's tum and telling Bridget she should get sprogged up or some such nonsense.

Portofino · 11/11/2009 21:23

Agree - they are excited! Why would you want ot begrudge them this?

MakemineaGandT · 11/11/2009 21:24

I hate it too.

"We're expecting a baby!" - absolutely fine

"We're pregnant"! - irritating beyond belief.

cakeslover · 11/11/2009 21:24

totally annoying IMO.

ClaireDeLoon · 11/11/2009 21:25

Yes G&T - we're having a baby is fine just not we're pregnant it's just odd and wrong.

Vallhala · 11/11/2009 21:36

I tend to look around for the nearest blunt instrument when I hear people exclaiming this. Its just one of those expressions which immediately gets my back up.

Whats more, is it me or is this generally said by a certain organic lentil munching class type?

poshsinglemum · 11/11/2009 21:53

I don't begrudge excited couples although i admit i do get a bit jealous as i wasn't in a couple when pregnant.
i just think it is annoying. no problem with were expecting a baby. that's really sweet.

Vivia · 11/11/2009 22:50

I totally agree G&T - 'we're expecting', 'we're having a baby' are both fact. 'We're pregnant' is in no way accurate.

muggglewump · 11/11/2009 22:53

I don't like it either and find the folk who do this go on to start calling each other Mummy and Daddy in a way I consider both twee and creepy.

hf128219 · 11/11/2009 22:53

I frigging' can't stand it. Just dreadful. Apart from biologically impossible.

KERALA1 · 11/11/2009 23:05

Its just a step away from the male half of the partnership saying "we're not having any pain relief".

Tidey · 11/11/2009 23:07

Agree wholefartedly. 'We're having a baby' - fine. 'We're pregnant' - no, you're fecking not.

wickedwitchofwaterloo · 11/11/2009 23:19

well, maybe some couples are just annoying

buuut... my fiance and I are really going to hell and back TTC and are just 8.5lbs away from being the right bloody weight for the fertility clinic to accept us so we can actually find out what the bloody hell is wrong with us...

... obviously, like a pregnancy, these things are all down to me, but we're in it together so when (not if!!) it does happen we will be announcing that we are pregnant

mrsfrenzy · 12/11/2009 11:45

I dont like that at all!! We are having a baby fine we are pregnant not I dont like the saying "trying" for a baby (although we tried for 3 years) it makes it sound like a chore! But what else would you say?

Seayork2002 · 12/11/2009 15:34

I am so tempted to say "great when are you going on Oprah to talk about........does the science world know?"

MrsVik · 12/11/2009 15:47

This is something that gets to me too!

We have some American friends who say this as the norm and when I told them that I was pregnant my pedantic part totally overruled my trying to accommodate their linguistic choices part, and it came out as something like 'Hey, guess what? We're pr..aving a baby!!'.

meltedchocolate · 12/11/2009 15:53

OK i am gonna come in and upset the trend....

When i was pg, I told everyone 'we are pregnant'

If we ever had another (not that we are together atm but...) i would say the same thing again.

We do it togther (maybe not literally) so I say WE are pregnant, when WE had the baby etc etc etc

I LOVE IT

Nassau · 12/11/2009 16:51

Yeah, well, at least they didn't tell you AT THE DINNER TABLE that they were TRYING FOR A BABY! Put's you right off your roast chicken that does.

KERALA1 · 12/11/2009 17:23

I never understand why anyone would announce that they are trying for a baby (and quite a few people do). Its excruciating embarrassing, conjures up disturbing images and is quite heartbreaking if time goes by and she doesnt get pregnant. This is a definite too much information thing IMO

wickedwitchofwaterloo · 12/11/2009 17:50

meltedchocolate - just us two then. lol

KERALA1 - but why wouldn't you announce it? I think its quite an exiting part of being in a couple, when you decide to try for a baby and tell everyone lol

KERALA1 · 12/11/2009 19:10

Hmm. Wasnt so great when my friend (wrongly IMO) told all and sundry at work they were ttc then had to have IVF, meaning she ended up "updating" people she didnt know that well about the whole process. She really regretted not keeping her mouth shut.

GhoulsAreLoud · 12/11/2009 19:14

Agree with we're pregnant being annoying.

Also think telling people you don't really know you're ttc is oversharing.

diddl · 12/11/2009 19:19

I also think it´s a bit twee.
Do people reallly announce that they are TTC?

Blöödy hell, we never "announced" my pregnncy until I was about 18 weeks!
