To be totally fed up with 'Do not smell the perfume' type 'community safety' chain emails?

You know the ones - don't smell perfume if it's offered to you at a garage. You'll end up unconscious - minus your car or worse.

The latest one I've just had is about carjackers putting a receipt under your back windscreen wiper so that you start the car, then see the paper, so get out to remove it and your car is nicked.

And they always have a credible looking police or neighbourhood watch contact name and details at the end of them.

Why do people make these up and send them, and why do people forward the ruddy things on? Stop trying to scare people and just delete them, please

Ooh, I just got one about burglars playing a recording of a baby crying - the idea being, you stick your head out of the door, head gets coshed, bingo, burglars walk into house.

YANBU they are horrible and pointless. Why anyone circulates them is beyond me, they only serve to worry people unnecessarily.

I hate them too - you KNOW that they're a load of codswallop but once you've read them you do feel just that little bit more scared about the big wide world and all the nasty people in it (or so thay'd have us believe!)

Also hate 'don't break the chain' emails about angels wishes and lucky stars. Think its really nasty when they say you'll have bad luck fo rthe next 10 years if you don't forward it to 300 mates within 5 seconds!

I disagree, actually. I read them and then file the info away in the back of my brain for future reference if required. Hopefully, it won't be.

But they're not real clam. They are hoaxes thought up by people who like to scare people. End result is people are scared. Not good.

YANBU. I usually just send a reply with a link to the relevant snopes page, that usually does the trick.

I think they're very insiduous. The modus operandi they spell out are just plausible enough to make you think that it could possibly be true. It's a horrible thing to do to people.

The fear of crime is always said to higher than actual crime, and I don't think that these kind of things help.

perfume one, i also once had a version of this one that said the woman had narrowly avoided being taken to be gang raped and there are loads more most of then are on snopes.

They are fables. If these things were really happening they would be on the news, there would be warnings out. That is the thing to remember when you receive shite like this.

I hate them. Grown up, otherwise sensible, educated women circulat them at my work! I want to be really rude but my insults would be seen by several hundred people so I resist.
