to hate the Students!!!

late last night we had a huge fight outside in the street involving a large group of students. The police came and arrested some on 'armed assault'
Today one of the other neighbours knocked and asked if we would sign a petition to get them out and to get the landlord to take notice, of course we said yes. I have emailed our local MP and am waiting for a reply.
The rubbish, the unkept houses and the fights are disgusting and we have had enough. Its getting to the point where we want to move, even though we love our house and the area

the nieghbour said the landlord doesn't care, he has had rows with her about the rubbish and the noise coming from her houses but she just laughed at him. He had his little girl with him and she said that they woke her up last night Luckily my kids slept through it but it was scary.

Do you know which university they attend? Do you know any of their names? You could contact the university authorities and inform them: they would probably receive a warning and the threat of being sent down should it happen again.

YABU and a bit stereotypical. I'm a student! Why don't you contact the landlord or the actual university before getting them evicted?

oh yes we know which uni they attend as there is only one and its very nearby.

SOME students can be a PITA, as can some NON student neighbours, sounds like you are near a bad bunch but please don't asssume all are like that!

agree that you should inform their landlord, as they have probably got something in their tenancy agreement about behaviour/nuisance, and keeping the place tidy

hellbent I know there are some lovely students (we had some next door last year who we never saw or heard at all) but as a student town, this estate has had so many problems, they don't seem to care.

It is sad that many areas of cities become student ghettos (seen one in Nottingham when DS1 was a student) with rubbish problems, late night partying, noise etc etc.
Most universities take residents' complaints fairly seriously, so it is worth contacting the university - especially with other neighbours - to complain about antisocial behaviour. And, universities don't like bad press, so if you do raise the problem with the local paper, the university may try to show it is working to some sort of solution to the problem.

Er, stereotypes have nothing to do with this. If they were fighting, they were fighting. The uni authorities should be informed. This kind of behaviour can spill over into the classroom and other aspects of their student life, so the authorities would want to know: I have personal experience of this.

's funny because when I was a student I really disliked the locals where we were, we were routinely abused, mugged, slagged off etc etc because apparently we were posh (of course, I'm from Croydon, the poshest place on earth!)

YABU because not all students are arseholes, just the ones you saw last night, and students generally become productive members of society which is A Good Thing surely?

Disclaimer: I'm not saying that anyone who doesn't go through further education can't be a productive member of society too!

the landlord doesn't care. She threw all the rubbish outside when last years student left, and just left it there, we were unable to get pass the rubbish on the path. The neighbour has tried to talk to her and she just laughs.

The OP is not saying all students are bad. Just the lot next door to her. She's perfectly right to want to take action, and informing the uni authorities is one thing she can do. As someone who works in a uni, I would want to know about this kind of behaviour from my students (the majority of whom are, as you say, lovely).

Sounds like the landlord needs to be taken in and given a stern talking to by the council. It's his/her responsibility to maintain the property.

Do landlords not have to register with the council/Uni to rent to students? Is it worth chasing that avenue up?

Students have changed since my day we were too stoned politically active to have fights with each other... all together now Maggie Maggie Maggie, out out out!

I'm fairly sure, even back in the dark ages of the 80s landlords had to join some kind of register if they wanted to rent to students. It may have been a Leeds uni thing, because lots of students were getting royally ripped off and living in terrible conditions.

I truly sympathise we have students next door now and although we had them before these are a nightmare!The uni used to let the house to 3 and it was fine but they sold off most of their stock last year at knockdown prices and now lots of dodgy landlords have bought them.The landlord next door has to keep it as a student let for 10 yrs so has decided to cram in 6 people and get more £.When I last spoke to him he said he didn't care if they burnt it to the ground as long as the shell was still there in 10 yrs time for his pension .I don't know why students have to be such idiots (not all) they are meant to be the more intelligent youths but from what I see the young people who work locally are smarter and more considerate by far!I think you should approach the uni its your home whereas in a year they'll be gone

I think a lot of universities vet the landlords/accommodation being rented to their students these days, so if you were to contact the university and give the address, they may strike this landlord from their list of approved accommodation. The landlord would then either have to clean up their act to be approved again or rent to non-students - probably a win-win from your perspective.

Also, don't houses rented to students have to have all manner of safety certificates nowadays, not sure what the rules are called, something to do with multi-occupancy I think? Is this landlord likely to have followed the rules (doesn't sound the type imo)? Again I would contact them and hope for an inspection to be carried out on the property.
