To hate Sex and the City?

OK, so I am about 3 years out of date on this but still. Just been chatting on another thread about how the bit when Carrie says 'and then I got to thinking...' and you see her type some inane crap.

HATE HATE HATE the film with a vengeance.

It's so fluffy and crap. I don't even get the excitement about the clothes.

Carrie - an explosion in a boutique.
Samantha - Stacey Slater's market stall clothes
Miranda - Next suits
Charlotte - Boden.

I have seen a few bits of it. And it was totally irrelevant to my life and contained nothing I'm interested in. So I see no need to watch any more of it (oh, and for the record, I hated Friends just as much.Heteromonogamist wank. And that other rubbish UK, Cold Hearts or COld Feet or something. Heteromonogamy is just not a fucking plot.)

yeah but with respect SGB most people (in this western country) do aspire to be/or live like hettie-monogomy

so it is kind of a reflection of society in that way.

Yes but a sitcom it NOT meant to be real life is it? It is full of stereotypical crap and that is what makes it good!

I like it for a bit of easy watching, but I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE Carrie. I get irrationally wound up by her, she is so incredibly 'me me me me me'. Aaargh, she's an appalling cunt .

I love Sex and the City!!!
I'll quote Penthe "Is this a Style & Beauty AIBU, or a political one? If the former, then YANBU - I really liked the clothes.

If the latter, then YADNBU! I found the supposed political-emancipation interpretation of SATC unconvincing. Found the whole pursuit of the "happily ever after" just too much to swallow. I know, I know, that this was why it was supposed to be "new" - ie. celebrating and depicting the real-life anxieties of modern urban woman, but come on. WASP-ish in the extreme, and mono-dimensional. Hardly revelatory"

Yes, I might agree, but it's great nevertheless!!!

A friend of mine, a feminist who teaches women's studies, thinks it's ground breaking for the depiction of women's sexuality.
Plus the celebration of female friendship.

YANBU. I enjoy it every now and then, as a brain-switched off thing, but on another level, it really, really irritates me.

  1. they are all soooooo self-absorbed, especially Carrie. No, she is no fabulous. She is a whiny, annoying little airhead. She's awful
  2. they are supposed to be intelligent, educated women but ALL they talk about is men. There are so many more things in the world to talk about, and if you only ever talk about men it inflates their egos even more
  3. Samantha is always making stupid faces, like this one.

I do like some of the clothes, like the GIANT ball gown Carrie wears in Paris this one

I loved the early series, with some reservations (can't relate to the clothes/shoes obsession, find Carrie too self-consciously beatiful and pouty as she sits on the bed in her sexy little pyjamas typing her article on her Mac). But it's true, it was much more forthright on sexuality than anything else around, and sometimes interesting about relationships.

BTW, what's wrong with heterosexual monogamy SGB? And actually there were a few story lines about Carrie's gay friend and his search for love.

And (possibly like most women who watched it), it made me wish I had a bunch of four friends who stood by each other through thick and thin, instead of the more fractured friendships I have in RL (people move away, change priorities, get married, etc.).

BUT, just saw the movie the other day on TV, and it was a pile of poo. Just disapointing.

Oh I love it and found it very funny. Loved the whole 'he's just not that into you' thing for explaining why men don't call.

Also Samantha did choose to be alone at the end of the film 'as she loved herself more than smith'. Oh dear - I've seen it all far too many times.

I thought the film seemed very dated by the time it came out - they hit exactly the wrong note just as the world was tumbling into recession - all Jimmy Choos and handbags when that was suddenly starting to seem so very 2005.

However, I loved the tv shows, although I agree that Carrie is deeply irritating. I was the same age as Carrie as she went through the tv shows, and single, living in London, so I guess I sort of indentified with the situations in some way (though not on the same show budget).

NU at all. I hated even the idea of SITC and watched for 5 minutes I recall as my sil thought I would love it!!

I watched the first episode and have managed to avoid it ever since. I can't bear that awful, skinny horse-faced woman, or the baggy old one who looks like she smells of cock. But then I am happily married, loathe shopping and fashion and would rather watch a documentary about mushrooms, so perhaps I'm not the target audience!

I used to moan about it too sea, even though I'd never seen it. I started watching repeats when DD2 was up being fed. I love it but Carrie is a touch annoying. And who'd pick Big over Aiden? It's madness I tell you.

Me, Me, I'd pick Big over Aidan anyday! I heart Big, "Carrie, you're the one."

I actually clapped at the end of the film. At the cinema. Dh was not amused.

Aah, I love it so.

Agree coco. She was so mean to Aiden, and he was so lovely (probably biased as I have had a crush on him for years, dating back to his days in Northern Exposure).

I mean, come on Carrie! Big?! He's awful. And probably stinks of cigar smoke ALL. THE. TIME.

Aidan is a big wet lettuce. He did look good when he came back into it though, when he was wearing that sheer white shirt, shouting, "You BROKE MY HEART!"
