To wish that they wouldn't start selling fireworks quite so early?

I know I'm being a killjoy, but was walking home last night and a group of yoofs let off a couple of rockets really close to the path where DS and I were. We got quite a fright as it was dark and we couldn't see anybody about (until the rockets lit up the night sky! )

This means another couple of weeks of having to keep our two cats in for the night before it starts to get dark (with them meowing at the door to get out!), the constant loud banging / explosions that wake DS up after bedtime. I don't object around the 5th November, but it's ages before then!!

AIBU to wish the supermarkets, etc. didn't sell fireworks until just before bonfire night, if at all? What's wrong with organised displays?

I'm a bit worried about taking DS out after dark now (difficult not to with the nights drawing in), in case he gets injured by a stray one.

I appreciate people with older / no children still want to enjoy themselves with fireworks, but IMO they are way too dangerous, especially when teenagers, etc seem to be able to get hold of them so easily and let them off willy nilly.

Well people wanted for divali which was last weekend so YABU

i dont think they should sell them at all, organised displays are safer and much better.

Riven, have you seen how much they are, they can probably only aford one or two (thank goodness - they would be going off alll bloody night)

I would say YANBU, it is bloody annoying, but I hadn't considered that they're being sold for divali.

Yes, I'm sorry, I hadn't considered divali either , but even if they could be sold only from certain outlets?, they seem to be so freely available.

I appreciate that because DS is still young, I probably don't know what I'm speaking about, but think when he gets to the age where he is going out and about with his pals, I'm probably going to be really worried about him being hit by one if a prank goes wrong or something.

I bloody bloody hate fireworks. They are so annoying, not to mention dangerous. They are basically just little bombs, and seeing as MI5 spend most of their time keeping bombs out of the hands of the general public I really do not get why there isn't more restriction on who can get hold of them (thinking mostly in terms of age - 18 is too young, imo).

But I am a grumpy old (though actually physically quite young) woman.

fireworks make me feel physically sick. I cant enjoy them as they scare me so much. Its been like this ever since I was little. Have always had to be indoors if ive been at anyone's who has had fireworks displays.

No yanbu cos it drives my dog insane and last night one went off which sounded like a bomb around 11pm woke me and dd2 up took another bottle of milk to get her off again.

Dog looked relieved we were downstairs again though..

Last year my neighbour bought a firework so big they had to half bury it in the garden before it was 'safe' to let off - they set it off without warning at 10:30 at night and the windows in my house shook - it was beyond loud! As nancy5 says, they are well expensive for a couple of seconds of 'ohh' and 'ahh' - our local display is free but donations are requested for the local charity who organises them.

Air bombs. Hate them. You're having a nice casual stroll, when suddenly you and your DCs jump 10 feet into the air because some fool has decided it's really cool exploding fireworks at 2:30 in the afternoon.

No I don't think you're being unreasonable at all. In 1995 in Leeds the rented house I was in burnt to the ground when some local children thought it would be hilarious to put a firework through our cat-flap and into the cellar. A carpet in the cellar caught fire & along with it the rest of the house. I've hated fireworks ever since and don't see why they should be sold at all, organised displays are more than adequate and much safer.

I also have a poor greyhound who gets really wound up and scared by all of the bangs, it's actually not too bad where we live now but it was like living in bloody Iraq where we were before....

Sorry bit of a rant as I hate them so much.....

YANBU. I hate them and just dread working that night because of all the burns from people who don't realise a sparkler is hot. however one of my dogs adores them and will sit for hours at the window watching them over glasgow. V strange.

Gosh Ravgirl, that is truly horrendous. I'm glad you got out o.k, but what a horrible time it must have been for you
