Just found dear enthusiastic DH cleaning the bathroom (he had done two and was on the third - not a big house but we have got lots of bathrooms). Anyway I commented when I saw him scrub the inside of the loo - UNDER the water line - and then bring the cloth outside to clean the outside of the loo bowl. I then asked if he used a different cloth for the other bathrooms. Turns out he had used one little sponge cloth for all three bathrooms, all three have been subjected to the scrubbing down the loo treatment and then he takes the cloth to the next bathroom, wipes down the sides where our toothbrushes sit, does the bath, and then repeats with the loo procedure!

Three loos, one cloth, three sets of bathroom sides, floors and baths now covered in poo germs!

Am I the only person who thinks this gross, and uses seperate cloths, loo brushes or bits of loo roll to clean the loo and a cloth kept seperately for the sides?

He thinks I am being mean and not appreciating the brilliant job he has done with the sparkly bathrooms! I feel slightly sick.

I'm another one who's be bloody overjoyed if her OH even thought about cleaning at all. Instead I have to deal with piss round the bowl and skid marks inside it...no one but me seems to give a toss.
How many times do I have to get the arse with him before any changes happen? Think I'll withdraw marital rights...oh right..we've hardly done it anyway since DC2 aged 14 months was born.

thesouthsbelle · 24/10/2009 18:09

(think it helps for me it's only me & DS in the house) - althou I refuse to sort it out for XH.

UndomesticHousewife · 24/10/2009 18:17

I use either the value cloths (38p or so for 10) or take the scouring sponge thing that I used to wash the dishes.
Clean the sinks (in bleach based product), bath, shower cubicle, then I do the toilet then I throw the cloth away. I never use the same cloth if I've cleaned the toilet even if it has been rinsed in bleach.
I just couldn't, I'm a bit funny like that.

ceres · 24/10/2009 21:23

i use a different cloth for the loo and the basin/sink/shower.

i don't get why people throw the cloth away afterwards though. i chuck all my cloths in the wash at 60 which is hot enough to kill all germs, they then go back in the drawer. this means that the cloth i used to clean the loo might next be used to wipe the kitchen surfaces..........but it's clean so what difference does it make?

my dh is really funny about use by dates and things like that but would happily use the same kitchen cloth and tea towel for WEEKS if i didn't change them (which i do at least once a day).

ROFL artlesschaos

as to the OP - Good God NO! YANBU

LittleWhiteWereWolf · 24/10/2009 21:34

Yeuch.

does he need one of these?

legspinner · 25/10/2009 08:03

Agree with ceres. I don't throw my loo cloths away either (soak them in nappy disinfectant after cleaning the loos, then throw them in a wash). No way would I use a loo cloth for the rest of the bathroom so YANBU...

Wow this really got a reaction! I am so pleased it's him not me who is mad as a hatter in thinking its ok to do.

TBH I suspect if i had not caught him that the cloth would have been put back in the cloths place and quite possibly used as a kitchen cloth next without even getting washed. I have never seen him put a cloth in the wash so that's a guess but [retch].

Men hey? At least he won't do it again now!

Ick! I wouldn't clean the inside of a loo with a cloth anyway.

Belgrano · 25/10/2009 19:08

Quite, OrmIrian!

You´re not a (whispers)-brush, user, are you?

luciemule · 25/10/2009 19:55

I buy 30 blue cloths and each time I clean the downstairs loo or bathroom, I start by doing sink, then bath and loo last and then chuck each separate cloth away.
I always find the same cloth at MIL house in the bathroom cupboard - euwww!
In the kitchen, I use a sponge cloth for wiping surfaces and another for washing dishes. Bleach or boil wash cloths.

ceres · 25/10/2009 20:06

but what is wrong with washing cloths and then using them again?

kitkatsforbreakfast · 25/10/2009 21:58

Some of you mners are really wierd (no offense, just can't think of appropriate word). There was a loo cleaning/loo brush thread on a while ago, and it made me really that I use a loo brush, but always considered myself pretty hygienic.

So I did a very unscientific survey, and looked in all my friends' loos, when possible and without embarrassing myself. Every single one had a loo brush there. So who are all you people who don't use them? I don't know you anyway.

I use loo brushes, left in bleachy water to disinfect after each use, then rinsed. I use cloths, and, gasp, wash them for using again.

I'm sure I saw some research somewhere that said that in general people's loos are cleaner, with fewer bacteria than their kitchen work surfaces. Must go and google...

I stick my cloths (kitchen and bathroom) in the microwave as well as bleaching them. That zaps a good few germs.

scottishmummy · 25/10/2009 22:08

i have different coloured cloths
separate kitchen and bathroom cloths

SqueezyCheesyPumpkin · 25/10/2009 22:11

clam - cloths in the microwave?

frightstick · 25/10/2009 22:14

It's horrid.

I use method disposable wipes to clean the inside of the loo. I haven't used a loo brush for years and was pleased about that when I saw what my baby was prepared to put in this mouth!

clam · 25/10/2009 22:17

Yes. They need to be quite damp first. Zap them for a minute or two, then let them cool. Although I did hear some Health & Safety boff tutting about it once, in case someone forgot to use their common sense.
I also put them in the dishwasher sometimes too.

ceres · 25/10/2009 22:18

all my cloths are the same - white cotton ones. they get used for whatever needs cleaning, could be the loo, could be the fridge or kitchen surfaces. but after each use they are chucked in the machine at 60. scrubby sponges go in the dishwasher once a day.

i also use a loo brush. don't see the problem with them as long as they too are cleaned after use. like kitkat i soak the brush in bleach solution.

i do have seperate rubber gloves for the bathroom though.

oldraver · 25/10/2009 22:22

I have loo brushes in all the bathrooms but I only clean three of them. They all get a whizz with the brush and if need be a scrub with a bit the green scourer which is then thrown away.

DS1 I dont think has ever cleaned his loo. I recently went into his bathroom to spruce it up as he is at Uni and wanted to use his room and I had to chip off the limescale. I am not joking when I say it was up to 1cm thick round the bend, it looked like a piece of broken tile, it was horrid

JustAnotherManicMummy · 25/10/2009 22:23

One is supposed to wipe inside the toilet?

I just squirt bleach in a few times a week and one a week the bleach and limescale one.

I have bathroom wipes for the top of the loo and sides mainly because DH moults hundreds of thick wirey pubes and I am not about to pick them out of a sponge/cloth
