I want to make DD's friends presents as I resent spending money on kids I don't know when I make gifts for her friends I do know!

So, AIBU to make 4-5 yr olds presents (like superhero masks/capes, crayon/pad holders, bags to carry cars in etc) when I don't know the parents and don't know the child?

Nope YANBU, I am doing this for the legions of small children in my extended family. One christmas themed chocolate mould from lakeland + a couple of bars of dairy milk = many many cheap pressies. I think there are so many nice things you can make that work out cheaper than buying something. I only tend to stick to food because that's where my talents lie

I think your ideas sound lovely and I'd be really pleased if my DD got a present like that.

can you really make things like that for less than supermarket prices?
I would have thought if money saving is the key consideration, a trip to poundland and wilkos would deal with it with less outlay.

but I can see the appeal of handmaking gifts and getting something made with love and care, you don't get that from poundland.

I think a handmade present however cheap is much nicer than something bought. It comes across as very thoughtful. Also it is much more time consuming to make something so I think this adds more value really. I wish I had the time and capability to do this too!

I have huge amounts of fabric left over from making preents for DD's close friends (well, the DC of my friends) with monsters, robots, teddies, pirates etc so fabric costs are nothing. Also I have huge stashes of yarn from leftovers for other projects, so it is really just using up stuff.
But would the parents appreciate it?
My friends know I have made thigns so they appreciate the care/attention but would a relative stranger?

YANBU. I'd love that if my DD gets something homemade for present!

I make lots of things. Its normally very cheap because I use things we have around the house anyway, old clothes etc

Why do you care what the parents think? The kids will love stuff like that and if the parents don't they really aren't worth bothering about are they? Fab ideas btw, I will be doing the same this year

Ugh, I wish I could make tutus! DD hasn't been invited to any of the girls parties. Or the boys parties for that matter Just this first one.
I care what they think because I am a shallow person and want my DD to be invited back

I love handmade things, they have more...soul.
I wish we were friends with you... my kids love dressing up, even at 9 & 10 and I really dislike the plastic presents that languish in the toy box til it's time to give them to the charity shop.
