to let ds have long hair?

PFB Ds is 26mnths, until he was one he had 2 inches of white hair stood on end, he looked like a dandelion clock, that was cute, everyone loved it, now its long and floppy everyone has something to say!

family members saying hell need it tied up for nursery, thinking its funny to try plaiting it and so on.

A Complete stranger told me ill damage him making him look like a girl! Had another older lady say to her friend 'someone wanted a girl' I have a dd she is 10mnths, granted she is bald, but that has nothing to do with his hair!

Me and dp love his hair, and personally i dont think he looks girly.

Why does everyone think all boys need a short back and sides, am i alone on this one, are longer hair boys so rare?

this is ds with long hair is that really so unacceptable?

I think you need to move near to where we live because the fashion for boys of all ages is to have long hair. In my mind it is not a problem at all.

My son had far longer hair until he was nearly 4 when he wanted it cut short. Now it varies according to fashion.

TheHeadlessWombat · 20/10/2009 19:25

YANBU. I think boys and men look great with long hair.

Twintummy · 20/10/2009 19:25

My boys are 4 and have fairly longish blonde hair. I've just cut it shorter (constant nits!) but it's still longish with a fringe. I'm sure at some point they will want short hair so I'm keeping it long until I can

All the boys have long hair around here too.

prettyfly1 · 20/10/2009 19:26

that isnt long and at his age it isnt a problem - he looks gorgeous!!

My DS's hair is long and we've never had any comments from anybody apart from my grandma who always tries to cut either DS's, DD's, mine or DH's hair whenever we see her. DS has two friends with long hair who seem to have had loads of problems! I have come to the conclusion it is because my DS is big and boyish looking whereas these boys are pixie like and blonde. Maybe I just don't notice the comments, the only ones I can remember are when people have said his hair suits him - short hair makes him look a bit thuggish.

bernadetteoflourdes · 20/10/2009 19:38

It is not a problem as long as he lets you comb and brush it. I work in a boys only nursery (private pre-prep) and 4 of the boys have long hair 3 out of 4 had bad crawling lice and the 4th was clear because he let his mum comb through every night and was not averse to a bit of brushing either. The other boys all had real bed heads and 2 of the mums thought it funny that their DS'S screamed at the thought of having it combed or brushed . Girls get nits too but girls are more receptive to combing plaiting and playing hairdressers. One lad in the group with regularly cropped hair showed up with a few nits, mum was beside herself because he was just 3. We had to check all the boys's hair and I am not exagerating to say two of the longer haired boys were alive with some of the biggest crawlers I have ever seen! I had noticed them scratching their heads a lot so I suppose we should have picked up on it earlier, so be warned!. However your gorgeous DS looks fine very well groomed and it is not that long, it is more like a mini mullet and I mean that in the nicest possible way, he is really cute!

ocdgirl · 20/10/2009 19:39

YANBU my ds has got long(ish) hair and i have had comments about him having it cut, but i say bollocks to them all he's my ds and i like his hair !!

OrmIrian · 20/10/2009 19:39

No you are not.

CybilCeremony · 20/10/2009 19:39

I personally don't like long hair on boys (every middle class uber trendy Mum in my area does it with their son in a n effoprt to make him look like Bodenesque fashion accessory)) but he's your kid, do what you want.

Twintummy · 20/10/2009 19:40

Didn't notice the picture. What a cutie!! and its not long

beaniesinthebucketagain · 20/10/2009 19:42

that you i didnt think i was BU but its getting constant now that people have something to say,

his hair has grown about 1.5inches since that pic.

I think we need to move, every little boy here has neat short back and sides going on, only ones with longer-ish hair have curls.

PIL's think we are keeping his hair long for money, he was recently head hunted by a modeling agency, Its money we wont see its going straight into his trust fund!

His hairs so fine and floppy i cant imagine it looking nice any other way!

That's not long!

What you should be aiming to emulate is style icon Rene-Charles Angelil-Dion (son of Celine).

beaniesinthebucketagain · 20/10/2009 19:44

Bernadette- he loves brushing his hair
and im really fussy about it being neat, if it gets to a stage he looks like a tramp ill have to cut it! hopes that will never happen

At that age no problem at all - and it doesn't look long enough to be able to tie it back, so that's a bit silly. He look gorgeous really

Long hair in older boys is up to them. ds has grown his a few times, usually about to shoulder length, but it's curly, so more of a mop. He usually gets very positive comments from older boys, which is quite funny (I think they admire his pre-teenage rebellion). He looks a bit like the curly haired Jonas brothers.

nooka · 20/10/2009 19:52

ds never brushes his hair, and has had head lice as many times as dd (once). But his hair doesn't seem to tangle at all, whereas hers needs to be brushed every few hours otherwise it turns into the most amazing birds nest. It was incredibly difficult to de-nit him though (he has very fine hair, which the combs either went through without nits attached or pulled terribly). If the OP's ds is just about to go to nursery it is something to consider as this age group is prone to close head contact and therefore high transmission of nits.

randomeuro · 20/10/2009 19:54

YANBU

My DS has similar hair

Your son is gorgeous

debs40 · 20/10/2009 19:55

Don't worry about it. My DS is nearly 4 and had the most beautiful blonde curls. They have since fallen out but he still has a blonde 'bob'. He won't let me get it cut. He loves his hair and I'm not bothered either way.

He is very pretty obv so is always getting called a girl. He isn't the least offended/bothered by that.

the alternative is to drag him to the barbers and force him to have his haircut amongst tears...what for?

pooexplosions · 20/10/2009 19:56

Thats nothing! You should have seen the massive curly mop DS1 had at that age, and my nephew has long flowing blonde locks.
Tell them all to feck off and get with the times!

bernadetteoflourdes · 20/10/2009 19:56

Oh gawd Nooka my heartfelt sympathies on that one! And OP if your litttle one loves having it brushed, well done, my DS is a nightmare if he sees a comb and runs for the hills1

beaniesinthebucketagain · 20/10/2009 19:57

thanks for the kind comments i think hes gorgeous too!

found a pic of current length. excuse the mess, hes at a pool party at his MUCH older cousins so hes wet too!

My son has shoulder length curly hair and looks totally adorable. We only had one time that he has ever wanted it cut and thats when he started reception and said he needed boy hair cos the boys were calling him a girl.

But after i'd plucked up the courage and the scissors he totally changed his mind and thank goodness cos he would look so different.

Your son is absolutely gorgeous so dont give a crap what anyone says about cutting his hair until you or he want to

ScaryFucker · 20/10/2009 20:00

he looks fab

don't listen to whingers

my ds, 9 has long hair and is dead trendy

I think he got a bit of teasing when it first grew, but now I notice lots of long-haired "yeti's" in the playground
