to think this is unrealistically short notice to provide food tech ingredients...?

DS is in Year 7.

He has food tech (or cookery/domestic science as it was called back when I was at school.....) tomorrow. He has to make a fruit crumble or pie. He got the list of ingredients in his lesson today

I think it is entirely unrealistic to have less than 24 hours notice. DS was at football practice after school, his dad brought him home to me at 7 - which was when I first heard about it. I then - after we had dinner - had to run down to Asda (which as I dont drive is luckily is 10 mins walk down the road) & buy it all. Frankly having been out since 7.30am at work, the last thing i wanted to do was have to bolt my dinner down to go back out to the shops!

I have asked DS if he had any earlier notice of this. He says not - and given that I have told him I intend to phone the school about it, I know he wouldn't lie as he would so easily get caught out.

So AIBU..........?

YANBU - and surely as they will have a lesson plan for the term, if not the year, they could put the plan and required ingredients on the school website/send home at beginning of year so that you can plan in advance

Personally no YANBU. I live in the middle of nowhere and would have no chance of leaving the house before about 9pm to get something and I don't really want to go shopping at that time.

I would also like to be able to include it in my weekly shop instead.

I would phone the school and ask to discuss the issue with the teacher concerned. hopefully it was only a one off but if not at least the teacher will no it's no longer acceptable.

YANBU at all, but I bet because you are a really good mum have made sure that your boy has everything he needs for the class. I would ring the school as well though.

I love DC's school, we never have to provide ingredients,just give them a lump some of about £10 for the term they do cooking and hey provide all the ingredients, probably works out cheaper in the long run as well!

I don't know why other schools don't do the same.

YANBU, this is completely unacceptable. What if you had been a single parent who doesn't drive ? Would the school expect you to drag your kids along to the supermarket, in the cold, at that time of night ??

YANBU - I would be livid! Especially at the moment when dh is away in the week and sometimes dd1 meets me and sometimes she comes home alone. I could - after a full day at work then have to go out with all three of them in tow. Would be a nightmare! Good Luck putting them straight tomorrow!

We used to do cookery once a week & were told at the end of each lesson what we needed for next week.

bruffin that sounds a great idea....might think about suggesting it to Ds's school!

So glad the consensus is that IANBU Feel a little better about ringing the school to discuss it now...this is my first phone call to the school, so didnt want to look like mad over-reacting parent!

I wouldn't mind but if he has my skills with pastry/desserts, the bloody thing will be horrible anyway - but of course I will politely force a few mouthfuls down!

Completely unnaceptable but i used to work with year 7's and the amount of parents who complained about the notice they had to get ingredients were too many to mention , however i worked with their children in food tech and i could categorically say that they had been given them at least a week previously so do phone the teacher to check.
I never envied the teachers job warding off these calls!
If he did get them today then i would imagine the volume of calls / kids with no ingredients will make sure it doesn't happen again!

By the way great mum to go and get them!!

famishedass - Why should the OP send her son to get the ingredients himself ? It wasn't his fault that the teacher (allegedly)only gave him the list today. Also, if he's in year 7, he will only be 11/12. I would not send a child of that age out to the shops by themself at that time of night.

Northernlurker - Exactly! I am not a single parent and I do drive, but I would still not be happy about only getting the list the night before I am expected to provide the ingredients, so I can only imagine how pissed off you would be!! I think the OP is great to have gone & got them tonight.

Chunky - In fact I am a single parent! and I dont drive either. Luckily the supermarket is nearby, and DS is ok being left at home for a short while on his own.....in fact he would have gone alone himself, but the streets round here are rather too full of hoodies after dark for me to be happy about that!

Obviously DS's dad/my Ex (who does drive) could have gone instead, but unfortunately he doesnt tend to put himself out to be helpful!

Maybe they expected that people have these basic ingredients at home all the time! Those that cook desserts like crumble may have the dry ingredients, and then you get the apples off the tree out in the garden, or the blackberries out of the freezer where you have lovingly frozen them after picking them in September

Oh no sorry I forgot it is the 21st Century and we dont do baking like that!!

Seriously I too would have ben cross, but begrudginly gone to the supermarket to get the stuff - we have 24 hour shops around here!

Lilyl - they are on an alternate weeks timetable - so with food tech they have lessons today & tomorrow, then the next lesson is in a fortnight.

I wonder how many of the other Mums will have gone out & got the ingredients tonight?! That will be interesting to know.

Hopefully then you will get the ingredient list tomorrow for two weeks time - then you will forget until the night before and have to make a mad dash to the shops - or is that jsut me!!

My classes had two lessons a week and the ingredients were't needed until the next weeks lesson.
Are you sure they are for tom ????

I am a Food Tech teacher (will duck to avoid flying missiles!!). I always give 1 weeks notice as I know if my dd's came home and said they had to have something for tomorrow I would be unhappy.
The number of calls I get about this issue and it always boils down to children not telling parents!!
If the teacher really has only given them today for tomorrow then they are wrong and it is unacceptable.
Someone mentioned about giving dates for the future for ingredients. This works unless the head suddenly announces the day before that he wants all of Y7 to do XXX instead of lessons and it totally stuffs up the order of lessons and then parents really would be miffed off!
If you are unable to get ingredients then the school should be able to try and cobble something together for them to make. Should never miss out for not having ingredients.
Phone the teacher we are not the sterotypical 'home economics' teachers of yesteryear! Although I do know 1 or 2 who still are!!
