to only bath my baby once a week?

According to my dear mother I am, I "ought" to bathe him more than once a week. If he's dirty or had sun cream on or something I bathe him more than that. I give him a top and tail wash with a flannel once a day, and of course a wipe down either end when its dirty. He's 6 months. I used to give his sister a bath every night at the same age and she had excema. My baby has lovely skin with no excema at all. Its not like he smells or anything

We only bath DS once or twice a week at the moment (1 month old) as TBH we have 3 other DCs and after getting them off to bed all I want to do is change and feed him and pop him in his cot

Also I am slightly nervous of bathing him as it seems he only likes a bath if it is a bit warmer than it should be. We found this out when DH ran a bath for him, after he had put him in the water I helped wash him and realised it was 'too' warm but it was the only time he didn't scream the house down.

I bath my DD everynight, she attracts dirt! Can't bear it when you see a dirty child with dirty hair, poor little mites! I also feel we are teaching her hygiene habits for life!

ilovealgreen · 30/09/2009 21:27

i didn't used to wash my ds that often when he was a tiny baby but now he is older (14 months) the bath is one of the best places i can keep my eye on him, other wise he is tearing round the place smashing it up. In fact he had two baths on Monday!

My DD used to get baby eczema and we used to live in N yorkshire which evidently has really hard water and is bad for the bubba's. My Dr told me this - dunno if true or not , but now in sussex and DS never had it - although i did wash him a lot less........

Oatmeal added to the bath is good btw.x

ilovesprouts · 30/09/2009 21:30

my ds2 has a quick bath every night ,

MollieO · 30/09/2009 21:36

I bathed ds about twice a week assuming no wee/poo accidents and topped and tailed him morning and evening. He had bleeding eczema as a baby and that is what the paed recommended. Most of my friends were horrified but until you've been in that position there is no way you can understand how awful it really is.

bacon · 30/09/2009 22:11

My 6 month old boy on average once a week and my 4 year old boy now showers himself (self cleaning - great!) twice a week.

There isnt enough time in the day to allow a bath and really it doesnt matter. I flannel down every morning.

Not as if they suffer from BO and stressing them out over hygine just isnt nec at this age.

It doesnt make a better person either so you have nothing to worry about.

SarfEasticated · 30/09/2009 22:13

I have to hose my dd (2 yrs) down every night after nursery - caked in paint and sand. Other non-nursery days I give her a bath every other day.

MiniMarmite · 30/09/2009 22:19

YANBU

I used to only bathe DS once or twice a week. We do every night now because a) he loves it and b) he gets his dinner in his hair and ears and everywhere else!

PVish · 30/09/2009 22:19

YABU

YUKERRONEY
they must honk

piscesmoon · 30/09/2009 22:24

I used to love it and they loved it, it was a special part of the day, so it was every night.

bibbitybobbityhat · 30/09/2009 22:25

This is a perennial topic on Mn which I always read with grim fascination and which never ceases to amaze me.

Ok, so tiny babies do not need to be bathed every night.

I concede that toddlers and older children don't need to be bathed every night.

But ONCE a WEEK people! We are not living in the 1950s. Why not twice a week. Or every three days? Once a week is NOT enough.

PVish · 30/09/2009 22:25

all that shit///

yuk

Fleabie · 30/09/2009 22:27

yanbu, people that bath them everyday are pratts

BonjourIvresse · 30/09/2009 22:30

I'm the OP. I bath my 5 year old most nights. She's at school and gets glue, paint and mud everywhere and desn't always wipe properly so needs it.

My baby however is either being held, or a play mat. If he des a poo exposion I do bath him, but apart from his own bodily fluids he doesn't really encounter any dirt and he definitely doesn't smell. He hasn't go enough hair for it to look greasy.

DD has a bath every night as she likes the routine and also loves playing in water BUT it definitely is not necessary to do that- when I was growing up we had baths once a week and I don't remember being surrounded by bad BO.
at fleabie though

Shauri · 30/09/2009 22:35

Lol - both my 2 DC were in a pavlic harness for hip dysplasia and it couldn't be removed, not even for a bath!! i had to take them to the hospital once a fortnight to be washed hence they only had one bath in the first 5 months of life!!
Now i only bath them once a week as advised by Dr due to excema.

And nope - neither of them HONK!

Olive11 · 30/09/2009 22:37

He's a baby! I can't belive that some people think he would smell etc. because he doesn't have a bath more than once a week.

IMO you are doing the right thing. If he has a problem with his skin then keep to top and tailing in between and stick to once a week baths. It's the best thing for your ds and he will not smell or look dirty

Fleabie · 30/09/2009 22:38

winny it dries their skin for heavens sake

lovebubba · 30/09/2009 22:39

Kids can pick infections up very easy when they are in nappies so they need to be kept clean and it don't take long to give them a bath or shower and they should start as they mean to go on.
I have two young children myself they bath or shower every day it also helps them get ready for bed and helps to relax them so get on with it don't be lazy! x

Olive11 · 30/09/2009 22:43

lovebubba that is so unfair, the OP is not being lazy!

If you top and tail and keep hands, face and nappy areas clean then why do you need to bath them so often as well?

MoonlightMcKenzie · 30/09/2009 22:47

DS (almost 3) has a bath whenever. No more than once a week, but rarely that. He is often dirty. I let him jump in puddles. I remove any obvious dirt with a wetwipe.

DD (13months) I haven't bathed since May.

Ninks · 30/09/2009 22:49

YANBU, once a week is fine for babies IMO.

DS has baths two or three times a week but I really should wash his hands more often.

He's always got one or the other of them down the front of his nappy and I noticed that his fingers smelled all penisy earlier. This was when I was kissing them

Olive11 · 30/09/2009 22:50

lol at Moonlight

Yes they are children! they do not smell!!

Olive11 · 30/09/2009 22:52

Eewwww Ninks! wash those hands!
