AIBU to expect Barclays Bank not to grumble when I pay in some cash?

Just been to pay in £47 in from a Macmillan coffee morning we had at work. There was £33 in pound coins, £6 in 50ps and the rest was the 20p 10p and copper - the copper amounted to 88p!

The man moaned at me as I handed it over, all in separate envelopes for each different coin, as it should have been in money bags! So I asked him to pass over some bags and I would put it in for him. He then was using a weighing machine to determine how much there was, so it wasnt as if he even had to count it!

What a load of fuss about nothing - the bank wasnt even busy even though it was lunchtime! What are they there for anyway if not to allow me to pay in some cash!!

I reckon it is a sign of the times as well. TO top it off he had to use a calculator (very slowly) to add up 5 columns of numbers!

So AIBU or not?

AH yes YAdefNBU.
He would have grumbled had it been in cash bags and they were not all for the right amount that is supposed to be in each bag so you wouldn't have won either way.

My bank refused to take some once even though I offered to count if for them as I had no bags. I just went to another bank who were happy to do it for me.

I had to go to Barclays as I was paying it into our Corporate Company Charity Account!

Perhaps he would have preferred me to write a personal cheque and put the change in my purse!!

That's mean not to take charity donation. Personally if it had been busy I'd have given you the bags but with good grace... but then when I worked on a bank counter (and bearing in mind I added up on an ababacus) it was manic and we had no weighing machine.

I did once ask a customer who had brought a jewellery box with random coins, including foreign ones, to take the coin bags and sort it out before bringing back to the counter as she was holding everyone up and I thought she'd do a better job than the crap cashier

I hate banks too. Which can be a problem... I am the manager

Lloyds have been like this at times for paying some bills over the counter in the days of cheques (back in the early 90s). They got really cross when I refused to pay them via the credit point as I insisted on having a receipt. The cashier got quite quiet when I pointed out if it was quicker for customers to use the credit point and quicker for the bank, then she would be out of a job as she would be obsolete.

Hmmm this is interesting, I have just been to the supermarket to change a bag of coppers for DS1 (has been collecting DHs abandoned coppers), it was only a few pounds but I didn't take it to the bank because I heard that they didn't accept them anymore like that? So off to the supermarket where they took 8% for the pleasure of changing my money!

YANBU. I used to work for a high street bank, all they care about now is selling, selling, selling - often unsuitable products to gullible people, and selling is the only thing that staff get any recognition for.

Therefore he was probably grumpy partly because you did not present any selling opportunities.

Used to make me so hence I have now left!

the BankofFruitShootsandheaves will accept any change and doesn't require it to be in money bags, just left in my the postbox will be fine.

Do you need the address?

This same exact thing happened to me yesterday! I went off to pay in our takings from Macmillan coffee morning (at NatWest) and got SUCH an attitude from the guy.

He even said grudgingly, that he'd let me pay it in "this time, but next time it has to be in bags". I very snappily told him that there wouldn't be a next time as it was a one-off, for charity.

He made such a big deal about taking some coins out of envelopes and putting them into bags, that in the end I said to give them to me and I'd do it. Which I did. While he watched. I was furious!

HSBC have coin counting machines in many branches. Very useful if you do this sort of thing often.

Thanks, will remember to hunt down the HSBC branches as opposed to Sainsburys who want an 8% cut of my DS's savings!

hsbc do it free, so quick and easy to pop your card in chuck the money in, and its in your account in 24hrs

verytiredmummy how bizare we had the same problem with paying in money! Maybe they have had a run of women paying in small amounts of cash - grumpy sods!

fruitshootsandheave lovely offer I will remember that for next time I do this!! . One of the guys at worked offered a similar service via an HSBC account!

Interesting about the Coinstar machines in HSBC accounts - will have to investigate that! Asda and Tesco locally have the machines but charge 8% for the job of cointing my copper - I can do that myself thank you! I have a stash of money bags at home then take them to the local HSBC branch where the lovely grumpy lady pays them in - no change in her attitude whether it is a £600 cheque or £2 I am paying in!!

HSBC machines are really fun (god I am quite sad) as you just tip all your coins in and it counts it up for you.

We don't seem to have them over here (Oz) and I have to deal with the sniffy person grudgingly taking in my little bags of coins now and then.

I used to work for a bank but in the call centre, all i know about the big bad branches is that I would never have wnted to work i one. Yes sales is the main part of their job, in fact lots of staff will be on some sort action plan due to not hvaing hit their targets, bascially if they're not made redundant they'll get the sack anyway for not selling enough.
