Are they waiting for all the lads who hang around, smoking pot, playing football and scrathing peoples cars to go home to bed.

They probably never thought about the possible reaction of any dogs. You could always ring them and, nicely, let them know that it's something they should take into consideration in future.

maybe they are patrolling the area to deter the 'lads' and are not, in fact, under your employ as your personal guards? They do not have time to go around an area if they don't already need to go around it, so are probably leafleting as they go.

Hey ho, if they'd left you out of the leafleting campaign they'd have been wrong about that too....

As for your dog barking - your problem. If you don't like being woken by a dog, get rid of the dog.

Do you know it was the police posting the letters through the door?

i doubt if the police were actually putting leaflets through the door - dont they usually employ somebody to do this kind of thing?

We've had these types of letters before. I have no objection to the letter being posted, just the hour of night it was posted. I'd be pissed off if somebody delivered a pizza shop menu or a request for old clothes for charity at that time of night.

As for the dog barking, Im glad that the dog barks to make us aware. The dog doesnt know the police like to deliver letters in the middle of the night. For all we knew it could have been somebody posting a fire bomb through the door. You might think Im being extreme but this is not unheard of round here. Children have died from such acts.

Also we have a lot of disabled and elderly neighbours in our street. They could have been terrified lying in bed and hearing the postbox clattering.

I would be pissed off actually, and i know it would wake mil and prob other little old ladies up and send them downstairs to check what on earth it was, as she would be terrified kids would have put fireworks through due to time of year

YABU - they're doing their job & they work pretty crap hours, things don't always go to plan & sometimes they have to do things much, much later then intended. I'm sure they did't mean to wake your household up but as a dog owner myself that's par of the course, you have a dog it' going to bark!

I can't believe people think this is OK! I would have been terrified to hear something coming through the letterbox after midnight. How ridiculous!

YANBU. 12.30am is a ridiculous time to be posting anything. I appreciate the police are busy, etc., but that's the sort of thing that would freak people out.

YANBU. in my block at the moment, if anyone had posted something through my door at that time of night I would have phoned the police. Not because of something being posted, but because someone was at my door and 'doing something' too it iykwim?

In the last couple of months, I've had an attempted break in (started off with someone putting their hand through my letter box), closey on fire, we have junkies shooting up in the closey, junkies calling at my door looking for drugs, because they've confused my flat with the local dealer, people sleeping in the closey, and now cars are getting broken into (my neighbours was done last night) etc.

I have been told by the police any unknown noises, people trying the door etc that we are to call them.

Actually I know the police round here wouldn't do it at that time of night, because they know that we are living in fear!

Last night when the police were out (again!) due to my neighbours car being broken into, they wouldn't put the leaflets with crime stoppers number through peoples doors, because it was too late and it might cause unnecessary worry to some people. It was 9pm at night.
They came back this morning with the leaflets and took statements from people.

The housing employ extra police to go around the estate, plus we have Specials going round as well, so Im sure they could have asked the specials to post them duing the day.

Well the letter gave us a phone number to report anti social behaviour, I might just give them a call

I understand why you would be pissed off about the dog barking but
a) it means the police are patrolling your area and guess what - crime occurs after midnight
b) the police can't do right for doing wrong imo. If they were putting leaflets round in the day a large percentage of people would say that they should be protecting the public from burglars/robbers/rapists etc rather than sticking leaflets through the door.
It could have been a special posting the leaflets as they too work after midnight.
It may be that there had been an incident involving the subject of the ASBO and therefore the leaflets needed to be delivered to inform the community ASAP

And of course there has been incidents of anti social behaviour, if they had posted the letters earlier, the police would have seen it for themselves.

I really dont think that the police should be getting paid to post letters at any time of the day or night. There are community groups who could have posted them during reasonable times, like 9am when all the little bleeps who terrorise the neighbourhood are in their beds school. Even posting them through the royal mail would be cheeper than using the police.

I told some Scouts off last year for knocking on my door at 9pm to sell bonfire night tickets, they knocked so hard on the door they scared me and woke up a just settled teething baby, I was f'ing furious and they got my roth BIG TIME.

It had been a very long 48 hours and I had just sat down. I phoned the Scouts to complain the next day I was so pissed off and they apologies saying it was way too late for them tobe selling tickets.

YANBU - it's an unreasonable time to make that delivery, and given the topic, something for the local radio station to ask about, I'd have thought, depending on the answer they gave!

Many would consider a stranger walking around the street at that time with suspicion, and would get some dogs barking anyway, let alone putting things through letterboxes. It's the sort of time someone suspicious might want to leave hate mail, rather than a police notice.

Good way to know the whole area, paths onto open space, etc, at a more 'intimate' level I'd guess, than could ever be achieved by someone driving around a neighbourhood as a civilian, or in a police car.

Where I lived before, there was regular trouble from drug dealers near the youth club, empty cider bottles and other items left on the green outside the primary school, and yobs forever trying to break into either youth club or school.

Were the police in evidence? Hardly ever - the centre of town got their full complement of staff (understandable, I suppose, given any single shift will have limited numbers). Things may have changed since there may now be CSOs in the area and not being 'diverted' to the town centre.
