to think noone should stay in a job they dislike because of the pension

fil hates his job, could swicth to something similar doing something he enjoys more, but doesn't want to change job as it will mess up his pension

to do this switch he would have to chaange companies

he still has 15+years to work

seems a shame to not enjoy it to me

and if your trying to get as much money as possible for when retire you might end up too old/ill to enjoy it

15 years is a long time to keep doing something he hates. Surely the pension rights he has accrued will stay in the company scheme even if he moves job? So he'd get 3/5 of that full pension, or whatever the proportion, plus a proportion of whatever pension scheme his new job provides (or a private one).

Up to him I suppose. Loads of people don't like their jobs much and just see them as a means to an end.

People stay in jobs they don't like for all sorts of reasons - pension, holidays, perks, whatever.

It's not something I would do - quality of life is more important.

But I suppose it's about priorities for him, if his pension is more important than doing something he loves then he'll stay where he is.

Lots of people say they 'hate' their jobs, but really mean it's not what they'd rather be doing. If it was truly soul destroying for him, I'm sure he'd leave.

He may be in a final salary scheme which is now closed, so any pension he'd accrue elsewhere would n't compensate and presumably it is a long time since he started a comepletely new job, so a daunting propsect. Yes it seems a shame but security is more important to some.

Not many jobs have a pension though. Seems as good a reason as any to stay put if alternatives are not siginificantly more lucrative. Most jobs are boring though, really.

its not a final salery pension hes been there about 7 years maybe 8

I know someone who persevered with the job from hell for 20 yrs because of the pension. He pretty much hated every day he worked there. He was made redundant 6 months ago yet still has 25 yrs left of work. He is at a loss what to do with himself, can't find a job and doesn't even know what he wants to do.

That's awful about your dad, justabout.

But many people (like my gran) will live well into their 80's or even 90's these days.

Good idea to have provision for a long retirement as that what's many people do have.

There were some kids (ages ranged from 19 -24 years) who stayed in my first job (public sector) just for the pension even though they were bored and disliked the job.

Totally mad IMHO, YANBU

loads of people do...lots and lots and probably thousands of people have to stay in jobs they don't like because of things like that. Is just life imo.

of course, it would be bloody great if it wasn't the case but it just is sadly!
