...Shiraz?

"are you sure it's not Merlot?" I giggled. Dd was very .

Megglevache · 22/09/2009 21:14

Awwww I bet it seems terribly exotic to her.

I thought the same when I met a Maxine when I was 6
I bet her friend is called Shaz really

easylife73 · 22/09/2009 21:19

There was a kid at my school when I was growing up who had a sister called Ariel. We used to tease her mercilessly asking if her brother was called Daz...kids can be cruel...

BikeRunSki · 22/09/2009 21:21

Maybe it is Shanaz? I went to school with a very sensible Shanaz (may have spelling wrong) and believe it to be a genuine Asian name.

cariboo · 22/09/2009 21:26

dd doesn't even know what Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, etc are so my wit stupid joke was wasted.

OP posts:
SixtyFootDoll · 22/09/2009 21:27

Sheraz is I think an Asian name.
( it was my original MN name, a play on Shiraz - so know that when I googled it)

Zoya · 22/09/2009 21:28

Shiraz is a fairly standard Muslim name - and given that, it might be as well to be careful with the jokes about alcohol, not everyone will be as amused by your witticism as you evidently were.

cariboo · 22/09/2009 21:31

oh dear!

OP posts:
GeekIsGood · 22/09/2009 21:32

Zoya I don't think Muslims are offended by the very existence of alcohol.

TrillianAstra · 22/09/2009 21:32

That's much less funny now 60ftdoll! You've ruined the fun of snobbiness

COuld be wrose, could be CharDONNaaaaay.

cariboo · 22/09/2009 21:33

lol!

OP posts:
cariboo · 22/09/2009 21:37

Not snobbishness, honestly! It's not as if it were Chardonnay, as you saaaaay. It was just a little jokelette that I thought I'd share. I knew some ol' sobersides would have a go at me, which is half the fun of posting on AIBU.

OP posts:
Zoya · 22/09/2009 21:38

No of course not GIG, but if someone got the impression that cariboo KNEW it was a Muslim name and was deliberately making a joke about it being an alcoholic drink, that would get a very stony response where I live. I don't think for a moment that you intended anything bad btw cariboo. And actually if you've never come across the name, I guess there probably aren't many Muslims in your neck of the woods... OK ignore me I'll put down the shovel!

lavenderkate · 22/09/2009 21:39

ROFL genuinely

HerBeatitude · 22/09/2009 21:40

No I would have larfed too.

I do hope she doesn't grow up to be an alcoholic, that would be awful wouldn't it?

thinking about it, there must surely be a generation growing up who are now reaching an age where alcoholism begins, among whom are more than a sprinkling of Chardonnay's?

SixtyFootDoll · 22/09/2009 21:40

Sorry Trill!

SixtyFootDoll · 22/09/2009 21:40

Sorry Trill!

lavenderkate · 22/09/2009 21:41

oh zoya it's ok to laugh occasionally.

Everyone is SO hypersensitive and PC these days.

Laugh!!!

GeekIsGood · 22/09/2009 21:43

Put it down slowly and walk awaay Zoya

I did not know it was a Muslim name either anyway, so YANBU! Would have thought 'better than Chardonnay but not as exotic sounding as Valpolicella'

lavenderkate · 22/09/2009 21:44

Valpolicella pmsl !

cariboo · 22/09/2009 21:45

Lots of muslims, christians, jews, buddhists, 7th day adventists, etc around our neck of the woods what with the UN just down the road.
