We went for tea yesterday at Wagamamas.

There was a family behind us, including 2 children - about 2 and 4 maybe.

I looked round after they had left and under the table they had left food, crayons, paper and two empty juice cartons.

I was a bit that they just left without even picking this all up off the floor.

Surely I am NBU?

Do you then wash your hands? I am serious! Your hands are then covered with crap from the floor which you will pass around everywhere.

I suspect you wouldn't pick something up of the pavement and then merrily touch a buggy handle, baby's bottle, another rice cake.

janeite · 22/09/2009 21:20

'Oh darling, yes, leave the nasty cartons on the floor - it's health and safety don't you know?'

Sorry - I just can't buy into that line. Food bits perhaps - but letting your children drop drinks cartons on the floor and then letting them remain there because 'somebody is paid to pick them up' is just scum-baggy - imVho.

ilovespagbol · 22/09/2009 21:20

I'd pick up the stuff we had been dropped by my kids and if there was loads of food, would mention it to the waitress and say sorry. I expect they see mess all the time and no matter how much I could try and clean it up, they would still need to give it a proper clean, as I would not have a broom and a mop and bucket to hand.

IWantAChickAndADuck · 22/09/2009 21:21

theseboobs the bag that the rice cakes/crisps, that I have taken to the resturant to keep my 7 mo entertained , come in... didn't know they sold rice cakes in McDonalds

IWantAChickAndADuck · 22/09/2009 21:22

thank you janeite and ilovespagbol - voices of reason!

scottishmummy · 22/09/2009 21:23

my fave topics cross infection, contamination.those of you who pick detritus up off floor, it has likely been in someone manky mouth, before falling to floor and remaining at room temp.nice ambient temp for bacterial reproduction

hence why staff have
anti bacterial spray
disposable wipes
ppe if needed

MadameDefarge · 22/09/2009 21:24

Well, I would tell my dcs that they had been really inconsiderate as someone had to come and pick it up.

We all have different rules for different environments. Its good for them to learn how to behave in a restaurant, not expect it to be just like it is at home. And to learn that their actions have consequences. We are in a restaurant, so now someone has to clear up after you is not a bad lesson to learn as long as you make it clear that their actions were inappropriate in the first place.

IWantAChickAndADuck · 22/09/2009 21:25

"Your hands are then covered with crap from the floor which you will pass around everywhere."

Do you have OCD? I am serious.

MadameDefarge · 22/09/2009 21:26

I hardly think it is the voice of reason to teach your children that picking rubbish off the floor is hygienic, and acceptable. It should not be there in the first place. Penalise them for dropping litter, but dont compound it by spreading germs around,

MadameDefarge · 22/09/2009 21:27

No, I wantachick, I am a catering professional and you should be really gratefully I take H&S so seriously. You would be the first battering down my doors if your dcs got some hideous illness because I didn't adhere to H&S regs.

Look, stop them doing it in first place, by all means, if you can (but god I hate all that entertainment crap, of course it ends up on the floor!)

I think you are all assuming the 2 and four year old gaily dumped there juice cartons on the floor as two fingers up at authority! Hardly. It probably just happened. Mum gave them juice she brought with them. No probs if they were eating. Got swept off table onto floor. It happens. Mum loses will to live under steely disapproving gaze of childless folk nearby...Or the perfect parents at opposite table...

MadameDefarge · 22/09/2009 21:31

that for me SM? and we were getting on so well!

I am the least OCD person in the world. But I would not pop a dummy back in my childs mouth if it had fallen on the pavement, I would clean it first. Same principle. Fingers go in mouths. Touch food. I would expect any food place to have those standards.

MadameDefarge · 22/09/2009 21:32

And your point in quoting me in your post Iwanta? Or are you just overwhelmed by the logic of my points and had to reiterate them?

scottishmummy · 22/09/2009 21:32

why are you cutting and pasting MD posts?what is your opinion

md is right as a caterer she has legal duty to maintain clean safe environment. caterer responsibility, not clientèle

Mumcentreplus · 22/09/2009 21:33

...

IWantAChickAndADuck · 22/09/2009 21:34

Madame - If this was a serious health and saftey issue, then you would be required to put signs up, as there is for any other health and saftey issue? Obviously health and safety officials don't think this is as much of an issue as you do.

scottishmummy · 22/09/2009 21:35

LOL at i want personally thanking posters for agreeing. cheestastic

Mumcentreplus · 22/09/2009 21:35

I don't get what the fuss is about..people are employed to deal with this issue in an eating establishment..every parent is different..just don't understand the outrage...

IWantAChickAndADuck · 22/09/2009 21:37

Back to the OP I do think that some parents are just lazy and inconsiderate by leaving rubbish on the floor in resturants, I doubt very much that they do it for health and safety reasons.

YNBU

scottishmummy · 22/09/2009 21:38

aibu with words parents..lazy..inconsiderate bound to get us all going.

MadameDefarge · 22/09/2009 21:38

Because, I wantachick, we do the health and safety courses and know what we have to do...if fannying mums want to prove how nice they are by scruffling around on the floor, we then have to tell them to stop. Ok?

doggus · 22/09/2009 21:39

YANBU. We often eat out and dh goes under the table with a nappy sack to collect the worst of the bits and I wipe the high chair down. We've had loads of grateful comments from waiters/waitresses for doing it. Totally agree with llareggub, it's all about manners and being civilised.

scottishmummy · 22/09/2009 21:39

point is clientèle shouldn't initiate cleaning under table etc. not someone else motives for leaving mess

scottishmummy · 22/09/2009 21:42

doggus how do you differentiate your debris from someone else debris.or does dh happily fanny about collecting all half eaten food debris with his hands

it has likely been in someone manky mouth, before falling to floor and remaining at room temp.nice ambient temp for bacterial reproduction

hence why staff have
anti bacterial spray
disposable wipes
ppe if needed
