AIBU - sexist science homework

Litchick · 17/09/2009 09:06

Lst night's science homework was to write a short passage about a famous scientist, what they discovered and its applications today.

Fine except that each question said 'he'.

Eg what was his name? What did he discover?

DD and I chose Marie Curie and changed everything to she.

AIBU to make the point on the prep sheet or just touchy?
Does it matter? It felt to me like it does. Grrrr

I shall Retire Not Out.

He'll never admit to being stumped.
I'm sure there should be a MumsNet rule banning cricketing metaphors.

MrsMerryHenry · 23/09/2009 23:09

Let's take it as an admission of defeat.

Now let's rub it in. New thread, anyone?

Actually, scotmum, I use wee brackets for when I'm not speaking.

See?

Oh, I could go on...

scottishmummy · 23/09/2009 23:21

well actually you are typing to anonymous many, speaking to none

so using wee to allude to intimacy or speaking is erroneous. they neither add urgency or intimacy they seem to be a faux colloquialism on MN

MrsMerryHenry · 23/09/2009 23:23

Huh? Did you not read my post? Who said nything about them "alluding to intimacy or speaking"?

Bizarre.

MrsMerryHenry · 23/09/2009 23:24

And what the hell is a 'faux' colloquialism??!

Fun?

Nighty, Leningrad.

scottishmummy · 23/09/2009 23:29

public forum read by anonymous many.you are speaking to no one

you type in belief that those you think you know are reading- perhaps
also many unknown anonymous others read too - definitely

so alluding to as you say "I'm not speaking. " is in fact wholly erroneous and mimics a personalisation the discussion forum cannot possibly offer

MrsMerryHenry · 23/09/2009 23:32

SM, perhaps you limit yourself to communicating in a totally impersonal manner, but I'd say you're in the minority, especially on this forum. You might think you can prescribe the way people write on MN, and you may even try your very hardest to do so, but people will just ignore you and get on with what they were doing.

Night night.

GrimmaTheNome · 23/09/2009 23:33

I take those constructs to be somewhat akin to stage directions. Mrs Merry may well have actually performed the action she types. The for sure!

It is a little pedantic to object to the term 'speaking' when we are under the heading of 'Mumsnet Talk'!

TheFallenMadonna · 23/09/2009 23:36

I think of them as stage directions too. Which is pretty appropriate for someone talking to another, with a large yet anonymous audience.

I also think they add colour and structure.

Like punctuation

Or should that be ?

scottishmummy · 23/09/2009 23:36

to speak is a verbal spoken heard communication.maybe call it MN write

no one is talking - nothing is audible.
it is all tap tapping pc warriors

Heres one of the definitions of 'speak':

2 a : to make a written statement

... and quite accidentally, shows the use of angle brackets to delimit an illustration.
