...car key? Lost my keys at the park the other day, been to a dealership today to be told that a new key is a whopping £90 and to code it and whatever is another £36, then VAT on top . (The car does not have any keyholes on the doors, central locking only so no chance of getting a basic non-remote key).

Just unbelievable. Anyone else had to fork out similar or know of other places than a dealership who can do it?

never had any experience with that but was quoted £500 by dealership for turning off front airbag!!! baby rides in the back.

I had to fork out similar amounts when I lost a car key. But mine was for 2 sets.

btw - Are you getting all your keys replaced and recoded? My car was always parked at the same underground car park space at work and I couldnt take the risk that the lost key could operate the car, so had to get all new ones.

YANBU by the way....am sure is a great money making scheme for them!

I know to get a spare set of keys for our car (coded electronic pin thingy's) would be about the same price as we don't have the master key.... which basically means we have no spare set as dp has decreed 'Getting a fecking locksmith if we lose them would be bloody cheaper'... which is all well and good until it's me stuck in the lashing rain with all three kids and no credtit on my phone to ring a locksmith at which point i reserve the right to kick dp in a very unfortunate place

dal21 - not getting any replaced, DH refuses point blank to pay it. If I we lose this key we're now using then we're absolutely stuffed.

What car have you got? I was quoted £300 for a key for my Vectra when I lost mine. Luckily I found it down the lining of my pushchair when I sold it!

My PIL arranged for our car to have all the locks changed when there was a problem with the central locking (ancient Ford Escort).

All very well, he got a good deal from an old school friend so it only cost about £40 but the silly bugger did not get us a spare key "because you will never need it"

That is a lot. I am kind of pleased now that I have my old banger which doesn't even have central locking (even though it can be broken into in 2 mins with a coathanger...)

Have done the forensic style search this afternoon with dd2 hindering helping, and been up to the local police station. Zilch.

Ours will cost about £300 (subaru impreza) and we've got to do it, we'd be stuffed if we lost the one we have left as to pair another one requires the car to go to the garage - which would require a tow if we couldn't drive it!

Get a spare one. I have renault megane. One of my keys stopped working so I only had the 1 left.

Imagine how angry I was when the only key card I had said 'card not detected' when i left the hairdressers!!!

Had to get car towed to garage wait for them to order new keys and code them.

£280 for keys and cost of getting towed!!

It cost DH £200 or so when DD microwaved his keys.

I'm having to pay the same to replace mine. We went for the hands-free keyless system when we bought our car six years ago but they didn't tell us the cards don't last for the lifetime of the car. Now neither card works hands-free at all and, even if you press the unlock/lock buttons, they don't work first time. I frequently have to press a dozen or more times before the car condescends to let me in. So, over £100 to for a new one. What a rip-off.

Have never even heard of key cards!
