Gah.

wahwahwah · 14/09/2009 15:25

Not really. But not people not being able to spell 'accommodation' or pronounce 'pronunciation' correctly really does. Don't know why.

LadyStealthPolarBear · 14/09/2009 15:27

guilty!

midnightexpress · 14/09/2009 15:27

YABU. Get over yourself (and I'm a paid-up pedant). I assume you're referring to the thread about yellow broccoli, so it's rather mean, and a bit pointless.

tethersend · 14/09/2009 15:28

Love the nickname KaDeWeh- but surely there is no 'h'?!

'Definately' gets to me every time. I have to go and wash my hands after even typing it.

expatinscotland · 14/09/2009 15:28

YABU. Broccoli shouldn't be grown, harvested or eaten, much less spelled out.

It's an abomination.

Bleatblurt · 14/09/2009 15:28

YABU. It's one of those words lots of people get wrong. Now go find something proper to be irritated by.

LadyStealthPolarBear · 14/09/2009 15:29

oh expat, it's just like little trees. Doesn't that make it more appealing?

Stayingsunnygirl · 14/09/2009 15:29

Broccoli is a word I have a blind spot about - if I write it incorrectly, I can see straight away that it is wrong, but I don't always get it right first time.

expatinscotland · 14/09/2009 15:30

No.

It's vile.

I lived once on a vegetable farm and had to harvest it. And eat it.

It's rank. Even when it's fresh.

Fuck spelling it. Just get rid of it from the planet and you won't have this problem anymore.

HigherThanAWombat · 14/09/2009 15:34

YABVU Expat. It's one of the most delicious vegetables.
I could eat it steamed for breakfast every day, if I ate breakfast that is.

random · 14/09/2009 15:34

No ..but I do get irritated by people who post about other peoples spelling mistakes

dexter73 · 14/09/2009 15:45

I always get annoyed by spelling mistakes and it is very sad of me but I can't help it!

Stayingsunnygirl · 14/09/2009 15:45

Good point, random and midnight express.

KaDeWeh · 14/09/2009 15:47

LOL, expat.

Um... I don't recall a thread about yellow broccoli (or brocolli). I read a thing about 'brocolli' in the paper today, which is what bugged me.

Tethersend - the 'h' at the end of 'we' was a joke about motherhood! (But a joke that's only even vaguely amusing to German speakers, so I admit that it generally looks just weird).

KaDeWeh · 14/09/2009 15:49

PS I've looked on active convos to see whom I've offended, but can't find any references to the green stuff....

OP posts:
Stayingsunnygirl · 14/09/2009 15:51

Here's the thread that to which I think people are referring, KaDeWeh.

MaggieBeauLeo · 14/09/2009 15:52

These things annoy me more if they're in print.

I have read torturous instead of tortuous. I thought, hang on, has it changed? It definitely used to be tortuous. There are lots of other things like that. Oh yeah, on tenderhooks. I have read that in magazine.

A bunch of mumsnetters are allowed to make some mistakes. Not everybody can know every single word, but magazines and papers should get it right. IMO.

Bleatblurt · 14/09/2009 15:53

Oh I love the old 'I don't know what you're talking about, I didn't read it here' standby that people come out with when caught out.

But you stick to that line.

tethersend · 14/09/2009 15:55

Aha, got it now...

expatinscotland · 14/09/2009 16:17

It is so vile, truly. And steaming it! Eewww. Do you eat sushi, too?

HigherThanAWombat · 14/09/2009 16:20

I love sushi.

OrmIrian · 14/09/2009 16:24

I can't spell brocolli It's a stupid word and I prefer calling it calabrese or purple sprouting both of which I can spell.

expatinscotland · 14/09/2009 16:32

Barf. I think you are my mother, here to spy on me.

She loves to send me emails whilst travelling, and her ones from Japan are always, 'Oh, I am having miso soup [boak!] and salad for breakfast, yum!' or 'I'm so glad I go to try dried minnows and pickled lotus flower before I die!'

She knows it all makes me want to pass the bucket.

GrimmaTheNome · 14/09/2009 16:33

Newspapers getting words wrong is really annoying. I think nowadays they just depend on spellcheck instead of having proofreaders. Its not misspellings as such, its correctly-spelled but wrong words. I once read a motoring article (about the only time I've ever done such a thing) in which 'break' was consistently used in place of 'brake'.

Broccoli is lovely if, and only if, smothered in cheese sauce.
