DD had first riding lesson today. She is 6. Booked a lead rein group lesson. They knew she hadn't ridden before and took her out on busy country lanes for 45 minutes. I was surprised

If the pony was reliable and the lead rein was on it would be ok.Might be better to ask for a few private lessons in indoor school or paddock if you are worried.Did she enjoy it?

she loved it was just abit surprised especially as instructor just said back in 10 minutes and then wasn't

as a riding instructor I would say this is rather unusual for a first lesson. I take lead-reins kids out for hacks on the lead rein around our orchard as a treat but wouldn't go out on roads and wouldn't go out at all on a first ride.

However, if she enjoyed it then no harm done. I would make sure that your child is getting some 'learning' time in as well as rides out though as both are important. Teaching LR children is rarely a popular job and taking them on a hack is a good way of using up the lesson time without the instructor acutually having to do any teaching Nothing wrong with that on occasion and is very valuable to young riders but should be the only thing the riders do IMO.

shouldn't be the only thing riders do.
