To put my dd in uniform even though her school is non uniform?

Pfb dd1 starts reception next wed, its a non uniform school, but another parent told me she was thinking of putting her son in a simple uniform to make life easier for herself, is this social suicide? was thinking just a plain navy skirt and white polo shirt........will all the other kids laugh? even worse will all the other parents laugh!! I have 3 under 5s so anything that makes mornings easier is good!

dd is 4 btw....

Seems reasonable to me - as long as you don't go embroidering the school logo onto said top!! Having a set of clothes that are used for school would just make it easier.

How would it make your life easier? Surely the child has to wear clothes every day anyway and you have to wash them when they're dirty? What would a uniform do to make things easier?

Good point.erm, not sure! I just thought it would be easier not having her take ages to choose an outfit which is usually not weather appropriate.....

wouldnt it be easier for you and more comfy for her to get her a couple of pairs of jeans/tracksuit pants and lots of plain T shirts? rather than a skirt and shirt?

It depends on how much say she already has in what she wears I suppose ? Will it reduce the battles in the morning over what she wears ?

Seriously, the kid is like Diana Ross in the mornings....4 outfit changes before breakfast type of thing.... I dunno I hate the thought of the other kids laughing at her or teasing her, might wait and see what reaction the other boy gets

Agree with allaboutme - was going to suggest the same thing myself!
I think the others kids would think it was odd, and so would the other parents, even if they didn't say so.
OP - are you secretly a bit disappointed that you DD isn't going to have the oportunity to look small and cute in a uniform? (sorry - that sounds creepy - not how I intended it!)

allaboutme that might work, but I think unless its obviously 'uniform' she will just want to wear her normal clothes

The 'uniform' you choose has just as little chance of being weather-appropriate as whatever your dd chooses on a particular morning though. I think the easier way is to jointly pick out an outfit the night before.

But if you do decide to go with the uniform idea, for god's sake don't pick a white shirt!

get uniform non-uniform clothes

eg 3 identical denim skirts
2 x whatever three-packs of tshirts Tesco have this season
2 x identical pink cardigans

all the ease of uniform without being, well, uniform

Maybe you just should pick out some nice, easily washable sensible clothes which are her designated 'school clothes'. Infants can make an awful mess of themselves - she may see the sense of not spoiling her 'best' clothes with glue!

My SIL sends her children to a non-uniform school and she has chosen to use an effective "uniform" for them. This consists of navy blue tracksuit trousers or chino type trousers, plus a polo shirt and a plain jumper, with trainers or leather shoes. She says it makes her life so much easier to know that these clothes are for school and any other fancier stuff they have is for outside school. The children are 5 and 7 and so far have no problems with it.

Kembletwins ...a bit! But I did choose this school partly because of its non-uniformness, but now I know what happens to clothes at nursery!

if she is starting reception then pick the clothes for her to wear

she will wear what she is given

our school has no uniform but in the summer months 75% of the girls wear checked school dresses in a rainbow of colours, and in the winter around 25% of the children wear standard school uniform, black trouser airtex top sweater. I'd be tempted to wait and see, we have dresses for the summer and winter tends to be jeans and a top, both DD's have clothes which are not for school.

yes the otherkids will laugh, and they will tease her. Brutal, but then, kids are.

you can convince her with the uniform now but once she starts and the other girls are all wearing different things every day and her best friend says 'lets both wear PINK tomorrow' - is she still going to wear her uniform then???

Why dont you have a new thing where after tea each night you spend 20 mins together choosing her outfit for the next day/trying on things and laying it out... then it will be hanging up ready the next morning, no changes of mind allowed!!

Go for teh non uniform idea.

Thats a point, she may well refuse to wear it anyway, she would def refuse to wear school type shoes so would prob end up wearing wellies or converse, the other kids would rip her to pieces! think I will do whats been suggested and have stuff in one side of her wardrobe just for school, I dont particularly want her nice stuff covered in glitter and glue, maybe I will suggest this to the other mum thinking of the uniform too.....

I would not put her in uniform but have three or four school outfits that are worn as a sort of uniform and she can choose from these clothes..i would put them in a seperate drawer from the rest of her clothes.

It won't make your life easier.

Easiest thing is for her to just chuck on whatever's clean.

Let her wear a variety of colours for goodness sake, not just navy and white. How boring.
