To think Waitrose is an obscene rip-off

I know they have lovely food, and you have to pay more for better-quality meat, etc., but surely there is no excuse for this:

Lindemans Framboise 375ml (raspberry beer)
Asda price: £1.64
Waitrose price: £2.19

Chimay bleu (trappist beer)
Asda price: £1.74
Waitrose price: £2.39

These are just bottles on a shelf.

Similarly canned food:

Heinz Spaghetti bolognese 400g
Asda 70p
Waitrose 98p

Toilet paper:

Andrex toilet quilts 9
Asda £4.76
Waitrose £5.35

and I could go on.

Who cares how much cheaper Asda is when you are never going to bump into a celeb? I have seen several in Waitrose, including the fragrant Nigella (and Charles) most recently - and yes, I did look in their trolley

Now you're not going to get nosing potential like that in Asda are you?

piscesmoon · 07/09/2009 18:04

YABU. They can charge what they want and you can shop where you want-if the 2 don't match up they go somewhere else!
I shop in lots of different places -I wouldn't do all my shopping in Waitrose but it is nice to do some. For example I get toilet rolls in Lidl and then I can get fish in Waitrose.

hifi · 07/09/2009 18:08

have been to asda once and dd asked "why does everyone smell mummy"

EleanoraBuntingCupcake · 07/09/2009 18:15

hifi - that is just ridiculous

cherbourg does smell of wee

YABU - as other posters have said, if you think it is overpriced, dont shop there.

I for one am willing to pay more for shopping where the staff are friendlier and the food is far nicer. No other supermarket in my area has the amount of local produce available as waitrose - which tastes second to none.

As for the price, look out for the offers - I stocked up on nappies recently when two packs were £9. And waitrose does price match in my store on some branded products, with both sainsburys and tescos.

UnquietDad · 07/09/2009 18:19

Who was the ponce who said she had to have some paint or other as it was exactly the colour of the such-and-such macaroons only sold in so-and-so shop? Still the most bogglingly poncetastic thing I've read anywhere. Can't remember if it was on here or in some article.

Tortington · 07/09/2009 18:21

rasberry beer!

LadyoftheBathtub · 07/09/2009 18:30

Actually I enjoy going to Asda more than Tesco or Sainsbo's. I think because I just expect a cheapo vibe and don't feel let down. Also the staff there are the friendliest and nicest to DS, after Waitrose.

maize · 07/09/2009 18:32

I think it depends what you buy really, we have very little money for food and so we buy cheap at Asda, Waitrose does not have an equivalent level of cheapness. I find it incredibly expensive for everything.

I think its all much of a muchness once you start to buy a mix of own brand, brand name and quality meat.

LadyoftheBathtub · 07/09/2009 18:34

Actually UQD, that wasn't me but I can understand that. I often see things and think "THAT colour! That's the colour I want!" never on a paint colour card, always somewhere inconvenient like on someone's cardigan zooming past. If I saw a perfect colour on a macaroon, I'd grab it and march it down to dulux for colour matching with no shame at all.

The Waitrose near me has a lovely little cafe where my DD loves to eat their mozzarella and tomatoe pannini. When I ask her what she wants for lunch she answers pannini. At 2.15 a pop they are a little on the dear side, but once a week for a special treat it's well worth it.

She's not yet 3, but I'm already priming her for a Saturday job at Waitrose. They take them on for 2 years before Uni and then will take them back on in the vacations. Isn't that great?

I LOVE WAITROSE.

florence2511 · 07/09/2009 19:20

sorry tomato not tomatoe!

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 07/09/2009 19:24

I am weird then cos I really like going to asda

bamboobutton · 07/09/2009 19:31

milknosugar, im not in london, im in surrey. thats why i hassled dh to find macaroons in his lunch hour and why im so pleased to find waitrose selling them, yum!

Errrnonymous · 07/09/2009 19:43

There is a lovely young man in our Waitrose - six foot three, well-spoken, normal haircut, no zits, beautiful manners. They have probably drafted him in to deal with the plentiful WAGs.

I want to be his mother.

random · 07/09/2009 19:45

Well I like a bit of rough myself ..thats why I shop at Asda

Podrick · 07/09/2009 19:49

Waitrose do not pay that idiot Sharon Osborne to pretend that she shops there and assume their customers will believe it

Asda are therefore so insulting that I would willingly pay double not to have the insults

BEAUTlFUL · 07/09/2009 19:55

I had a Saturday job in Waitrose when I was 18. It was lovely. You can see why the staff are always so nice - the interview was rigorous and we were made to treat the customers beautifully. Whenever someone asks you where somehing is, you have to stop what you're doing and escort them there.

It turned me into a snob though. One morning, I was on the tills serving a glamorous youngish couple who'd bought a handful of things for a picnic. After I'd rung them all in (by hand, this was 20 years ago ), I said to the man, "That'll be £58.75 please."

He said, "No. There's no way this lot comes to that much. Can I see the manager please?"

I rang my till bell thingy and we all waited for the manager to come over, while all the time I gazed at my fingernails with a superior look on my face like, "This bloke here can soooo not afford to shop in Waitrose..."

The manager came over and of course I'd rung it up wrong. Argh.

SomeGuy · 07/09/2009 20:00

May I point out that I don't buy the Heinz spag bol, although I do need to put in an order for the raspberry beer before Asda's 10:30pm cut-off, cos we've run out.

RubyBlueberry · 07/09/2009 20:09

I'll tell you a secret ..... I do mystery shopping for waitrose (and others) and the customer service is what it's all about.

LovelyTinOfSpam · 07/09/2009 20:22

YABU. For all the reasons stated. It's a partnership. I trust them more than the others not to abuse the animals/farmers too much or put loads of hidden sugar and fat into everything.

Plus rubyblueberry's insider info is a huge point. It's the reason my mum always goes to John Lewis - if something is wrong it is changed/refunded no questions asked. And the people who work there are all polite and smiley etc.

I am prepared to pay a couple of quid more for a pleasant shopping experience, sad I know but there you go.

And BTW ROFL at somguy now having to live for a week only on items which are significantly cheaper in asda than waitrose. Spag hoops washed down with raspberry beer - double yummo! You want to get yourself some of this and wash it down with this. That really would be a treat

SomeGuy · 07/09/2009 20:27

Well I agree that Asda is horrid. But I shop at Sainsburys and it's quite pleasant and still cheaper.
