To think Waitrose is an obscene rip-off

I know they have lovely food, and you have to pay more for better-quality meat, etc., but surely there is no excuse for this:

Lindemans Framboise 375ml (raspberry beer)
Asda price: £1.64
Waitrose price: £2.19

Chimay bleu (trappist beer)
Asda price: £1.74
Waitrose price: £2.39

These are just bottles on a shelf.

Similarly canned food:

Heinz Spaghetti bolognese 400g
Asda 70p
Waitrose 98p

Toilet paper:

Andrex toilet quilts 9
Asda £4.76
Waitrose £5.35

and I could go on.

Saltash is in CORNWALL not Devon!!!!!!!!!!!

Prunerz · 07/09/2009 16:31

I like Waitrose because they screw suppliers far less than the other supermarkets.
Ditto I like the Co-op.
I get things from everywhere.

Their fruit and veg is better, so is their meat, it is streets ahead of the other supermarkets - it's not comparing like with like.

I just don't buy cleaning stuff or basics there, much.

I also like it for Boden-watching and eavesdropping

I was comparing the cans of spaghetti and bottles of beer.....

Er, ok.

Bleh · 07/09/2009 16:49

Actually, I just noticed that.

You're buying Heinz spaghetti bolognese?! Well, no wonder it's more expensive in Waitrose. Surely they would not stock such a thing, unless it was hand-made by organic nuns.

IdrisTheDragon · 07/09/2009 16:54

Ocado keep sending me emails for 15% off. Maybe I should try it.

LilMissPerimenopause · 07/09/2009 17:05

I work in Waitrose, and undeniably you are right it is expensive but certain products are the same price as other supermarkets, and hehe the tales I could tell you about some of the more snooty members of staff would make you cry with laughter.

I shop there myself because of the discount. Not a bad place to work tho, if only for the discount and bonus scheme.

UnquietDad · 07/09/2009 17:08

Macaroons?

I thought you meant these

Funny that Harry Enfield is mentioned, as the whole thread reminds me of another of his sketches, namely this one !

SomeGuy · 07/09/2009 17:08

I did come across an arsey staff member in Waitrose a few weeks ago. I went out of the shop just before their ridiculously early closing time (7pm) with DW left paying at the tills to get our reusable bags from car. Walked past store manager who wasn't paying attention and then 1 minute later walked back in with bags and he tried to push me out of the shop saying 'we're closed'.

Hmm you should have complained to another manager - half the time the duty manager is not the actual branch manager, so if they are rude you could always complain.

You should have heard the choice comments and names I got called when I first started working there having moved from the local Morrisons...

SomeGuy · 07/09/2009 17:16

Oh yes, she is classic/poncey Islington deli Waitrose shopper.

Modmum - sorry about that! I don't know that part of Devon too well and I thought Saltash was on this side of the Tamar. Still, I guess it's probably the closest Waitrose for a lot of people in Devon.

FabBakerGirlIsBack · 07/09/2009 17:28

When I shop at Waitrose with a weekly meal plan I spend less than a free shop at Asda, they have nicer food it is a smaller shop so a much nicer experience and I just prefer it. The staff are a milion times nicer too.

ilovemydogandmrobama · 07/09/2009 17:29

Love Waitrose. DS spilled a drink we brought in, all over their floor. Seconds later, it was cleaned up, he was offered another drink, and despite me saying that I brought it in, they insisted

Conversely, at Tescos a few weeks ago, on the managers literally ran into me, refused to apologise, and said it was my fault for stopping I suggested the word she was looking for was, 'shopping?'

WhereYouLeftIt · 07/09/2009 17:32

I'm pretty lucky, I have a Sainsbury's, Tesco, Asda and M&S, plus a Waitrose in a nearby town which I've popped into once or twice on the way home from work.

And I shop in them all. Whoever's cheapest, taking advantage of all their special offers and often being surprised that M&S is so competitive with the others. at some of the comments on Asda though, no real difference between them and Tesbury's clientele here. Staff are always very friendly too. Waitrose was very nice though - big wide aisles, some products not available elsewhere, a little dear for some items but hey, I don't do a full week's shop in one store anyway ...

MrsPigeon · 07/09/2009 17:33

I love love love waitrose. Lovely meat and fish. Lovely little green tokens you get to choose a charity with. Even though you are not actually giving anything to the charity I freely admit.

LilMissPerimenopause · 07/09/2009 17:33

Hahaha just watched those links.

But really, the customers were nothing in comparison to the partners in terms of superiority complexes and sheer delusions of grandeur. However, that is another story..

EleanoraBuntingCupcake · 07/09/2009 17:35

boak @ buying meat in any supermarket poncey or otherwise.

lilysam · 07/09/2009 17:36

I love love Waitrose delivery. Free over £50 so would rather spend money on decent food than the delivery charges. Online you can sort the products in ascending order of price therefore picking the cheapest and they always have loads of offers. So I end up spending what i would trapsing round tesco with screaming DCs. I'd rather pay a few pence/quid more for the quality and variety. And better still, order cheaper stuff and if they have to substitute with more expensive items, you only pay the cheap price of what you originally ordered - fab!

I do pop to ALDI for their fab fruit and veg offers too so it all balances out i think.(oh and I;d rather shop anywhere, and often do rather than ASDA!)

JodieO · 07/09/2009 17:36

I do online shops on www.mysupermarket.co.uk/ and Waitrose always comes out about £25ish pounds more expensive than the lowest priced one (which is always tesco) without fail and this is for the same items. It's definitely a rip off and, imo, people must have more money than sense to pay more for the same item purely for the name of the ship.

Fimbo · 07/09/2009 17:38

I lurve Waitrose. Do our basics in Lidl and then get the nicer things from Waitrose. I too require a Saturday job for dd when she is older there.

Our playgroup did well from the green tokens.

I am rather sad when we go to Waitrose on holiday etc and they don't have a cafe ours do a rather mean bacon roll or cumberland sausage roll.

FritesMenthe · 07/09/2009 17:40

DH often buys up reduced items on his way home from work. We eat like kings whilst having a good laugh at the prices DH: "Would you pay £7.99 for this ponce-tastic butterflied organic chicken breast bathed in fairy nectar?" ME: "No, but I would pay £1.50. nom nom"

milknosugarplease · 07/09/2009 17:42

EleanoraBuntingCupcake · 07/09/2009 17:43

macaroons are vile, they are so post war.

oneopinionatedmother · 07/09/2009 17:50

YABU - waitrose pay their staff significntly more. this will be the main reason for the price differences - also they have nothing like the buying power of Tescos (and ASDA owns a fair amount of its suppliers)
