To think Waitrose is an obscene rip-off

I know they have lovely food, and you have to pay more for better-quality meat, etc., but surely there is no excuse for this:

Lindemans Framboise 375ml (raspberry beer)
Asda price: £1.64
Waitrose price: £2.19

Chimay bleu (trappist beer)
Asda price: £1.74
Waitrose price: £2.39

These are just bottles on a shelf.

Similarly canned food:

Heinz Spaghetti bolognese 400g
Asda 70p
Waitrose 98p

Toilet paper:

Andrex toilet quilts 9
Asda £4.76
Waitrose £5.35

and I could go on.

Cheepz: Ocado are not the same as Waitrose, they actually cut many of the prices to match other suspermarkets because they know they are hopelessly uncompetitive otherwise.

Nearly all of Ocado's branded stuff is cheaper than Waitrose - Opodo actually price match Tesco on many items, which Waitrose definitely does not do.

ah torquay, saltash, both are 35 miles or so as the crow flies.

bah!!

thanks for the info tho

GetOrfMoiLand · 07/09/2009 15:52

Now you are starting to sound like those French and Saunders pair 'ooh young man', rubbing their trousers.

Stop perving over polite youngsters in Waitrose (that goes for the rest of you as well).

CatIsSleepy · 07/09/2009 15:52

ah but waitrose are part of John lewis and I won't hear a word against them- the workforce actually get a share of the profits

oh, and getting my food delivered by Ocado makes me feel well posh

scroobiuspirate · 07/09/2009 15:53

Our Waitrose is actually cheaper than the Tesco next door for bread, yoghurt, milk and yummy pastries. Providing you go in mid afternoon, there are absolute bargains to be had..... just a pity we have to pay 30p for half an hour parking that's all!

Egg · 07/09/2009 15:55

Having just had another shite delivery disaster from Tesco, I just spent a while online comparing Tesco to Waitrose, they price match all the brands I looked at and I also looked at some similar products (slow cooked lamb shanks mmmmm) and they are the same price as Tesco too.

Used to always use Ocado but changed to Tesco when we moved house. Two years down the line I give up with them and am going to go back to Ocado.

OrmIrian · 07/09/2009 15:57

Oh someguy you are asking for fiery coals to be heaped on your head

NoahFence · 07/09/2009 15:58

snigger at enfield.

NoahFence · 07/09/2009 15:58

..the thing is that the enfield sketch if you reverse it is what a lot of women put up with regularly!

PuppyMonkey · 07/09/2009 16:00

Never actually been inside a Waitrose, as I was brought up on a council estate. But I heart Ocado and my free copy of The Times and potato rosti cakes etc.

SomeGuy · 07/09/2009 16:01

She said 'put up with', ooh young woman.

Well, where I live there's a choice of: Sainsbos (alright), 24 hour Tesco metro (always crammed, never do basics for stuff. e.g., I was looking for cheap vinegar, only thing they had was organic balsamic vinegar) or a very large and lovely waitrose. I love the fact that not all the vegetables are pre-packed (so you chose as much as you need and don't waste), though they are very poncetastic. I once asked a member of staff where the frozen meat section was, and he looked like I'd asked him to beat up his own grandmother.
What I do miss is in Edinburgh there were lots of local fruit and veg and fish shops, which is much much nicer at the end of the day.

And those Paul macaroons ... drool (particularly the Pistachio ones).

Bleh · 07/09/2009 16:02

So, YABU. It's value for money.

bronze · 07/09/2009 16:04

I use mysupermarket all the time and waitrose is always far more (I refuse to go as low as asda though)
I dont buy ready meals either

WinkyWinkola · 07/09/2009 16:07

I love Waitrose. I don't actually mind going to that supermarket. Even their and Ocado's websites are not a bind to use.

Tesco and Sainsbury's are really really poor in comparison. Grim and unpleasant environments and their ranges are kaka, I find. I never go to them.

With Asda, I know what I'm getting. I go there a lot as well as Waitrose. Some of the George clothing is great and they usually have specials on washing powder and bin liners - boring stuff like that.

They're all guilty of insisting fruit looks picture perfect. Supermarkets are considered evil by some.

brimfull · 07/09/2009 16:12

half of sixth form work there
tis a much coveted job
her bf is desperate to get in to the cosseted world of waitrose-arf

she hasn't got new uniform yet

Nancy66 · 07/09/2009 16:13

Most people tend to get pretty much the same shop every week - I know that if I go to Asda mine will usually come in at just under £90 - at Waitrose, the exact same items will cost me about £118 or thereabouts

But it's not every week that I relish being given evils by a scrunchy wearer or witnessing another car park punch up - so about one week on four i'll go to Waitrose and enjoy the calm.

LadyoftheBathtub · 07/09/2009 16:17

I love it too. Obviously it's not great when you're skint but a lot of the money does go to the suppliers and staff. I chat to one of the staff at ours, he's an older man and he was thrilled when waitrose took over what used to be a safeway. They kept the same staff on, gave them a week's fully paid holiday while they renovated, then a week's fully paid training course, and the new pay and conditions are better.

It never gets jam-packed full of people like tesco (despite their being about 140 tescos in the vicinity) and it is the best for little counters with la-di-da sample and snacks to try. If we go at te right time of day, DS can get his lunch as we go round

Like anywhere you have to look out for special offers and BOGOFs etc to keep the bill down. And I don't go there for every shop. But if possible I prefer to economise a bit on what we eat (eg more lentils and pasta, less meat) and go to waitrose where I feel better about how they treat their suppliers.

NoahFence · 07/09/2009 16:18

Has sophable been on her fish trip yet?

LadyoftheBathtub · 07/09/2009 16:18

oops! there not their

OrmIrian · 07/09/2009 16:25

Just checked and still no joy. Ocado doesn't deliver here.... we're too downmarket.
