to think that secured entry at nursery should not be turned off when it suits

AIBU?Do you think its okay to turn off the secured entry for a period of time each morning so the parents can go in and drop off the children, the door unlocked, so they dont have to keep buzzing the nursery staff?

Interested to hear your views...

Not okay at all unless there is a member of staff there to check who is coming and going.

At current nursery, I've never seen secured entry turned off.

At previous nursery, there was a more rigorous staff supervision of entrance so no concerns if security was switched off on occasion.

Is this the sort of thing that would be covered by Ofsted inspection?

What's the point having it then? It's basically unsecure during that time. I wouldn't be happy about it

there are no staff members around to see who enters at this time, it so annoying because I like everything else about the place.

sure ofsted would be interested in knowing that ......

if i were a child ped/snatcher etc (which imnot - promise) then the best time to grab a child would be drop off as so many people in there

secured entry is meant to mean that

i would FLIP if I had a child there and this was happeneing

thanks for comments so far, sounds like i am not being unreasonable, far from it. Will look into the ofsted thing tomorrow, thanks for the advice.

I have never known the secure entry to be turned off at our nursery. they are also really strict about letting people in with you when you come to collect your DC

In our last nursery they had an outer door that parents were given the code for. this got you into a reception area where you buzzed through to the appropriate room to collect DC. I never knew either system to be inactivated.

Have you spoken to ofsted/care commission about this?

I think its care commision in scotland?

I went to visit to see about getting a place for my lo and this is what I was openly told by the manager when I asked about the security.

I bet most parents with kids there dont even know, they would be v annoyed im sure.

have you checked their report on the care commission website?

i wont name the nursery on here purely because of safety reasons. Would not be fair, do not believe I should put anyones child at risk... no offence meant btw. just overprecautious.

On care commission report it states "the buliding has secured entry which is controlled well by staff" so on the day of the inspection they must have had it turned on otherwise I expect that would have been noted.

I would not be happy with this, the nursery I work at has a buzzer system which can be operated from the rooms there is a code but only staff know it

if someone we dont know is at the door we have to go to the door to open it and not let them in until we are completely sure who they are, and letting in some one we dont know would lead to disciplinary action.

Ours broke not that long ago so it was turned off so somebody had to go and open it manually.

Hell no! It doesn?t sound ok at all and it would frighten the life out of me if it that happened! I would possible be a little more frightened because I spend 8 working in banking and it was drummed into us that if someone wanted to commit a crime they would watch the building of opportunity and then strike at optimum moment.

You are paying the fees, tell them how you feel? I?m not sure how they could make it work, even if a senior member of staff sat at the door to view everyone (but then they may as well operate the door lock!)

it is critical - at DS's nursery, staff actually open the door to each parent rather than simply buzzing them through even if it means they are running to the door every few mins

the door is always secured and i would be fuming if it wasn't

YANBU they should not turn the buzzer off my goodness that is dreaful, anyone could walk in. At my dd nursery you have to buzz to go in and a staff member always opens the door. When parents come in acturally a staff member stands on the door welcoming parents in.

No that is not on AT ALL.

Tell the idiots toget off there ass and answer the door EVERYTIME.

If you are ever unhappy or have concerns about your child care or aspects of it you can go straight to OFSTED and report your concerns, they will be obliged to follow it up and changes will be made. Having secure access is fundamental. They are making your setting vulnerable - for the children and their staff. Sounds like lazy and poor practice, anyone could come in. I speak as a headteacher. That was my professional head speaking, as a parent I think that they should get off their backsides and answer the door every time, that they are taking the piss and are being irresponsible. YANBU
