To just provide a sit down meal after a christening and go home, and not have a big party?

Cant see anything wrong with that - it is what works best for you and your family.

We just had 25 people and both DC christenings and then back to ours for a small buffet - all over in a couple of hours!

We had the service went for a sit down meal (at a pub) for 2 hours invited people back for tea and cake if they wanted to but got the feeling people were expecting more so deflated the whole day for me.

I would say that a sit down meal is more than enough - what were they all expecting?? and what gave you the impression that people felt it wasn't "enough?"
How horrible for you - I bet you wish you hadn't invited them now!!
