'Fat Monica' in Friends is about my size? Which is only on the generous side of 16, hardly a whale....

I was worried that America would think I was massively fat but then I thought... hello?

YANBU. I really HATE that 'Fat Monica' is all jolly and cheerful and a bit simple. It reinforces a cruel and outdated stereotype.

I've thought before that she's 'plump monica'!! I mean she's hardly comparable to many vast americans that you see.

I love that exchange where they're watching home video of their prom night and monica says "but the camera adds ten pounds!!" and chandler says "so how many cameras were actually on you??"

Yes - given the way she's constantly eating and obsessed with food, and the way they make such a massive deal about her being soo fat you would expect her to be much larger. Can you imagine losing two stone or so and all your friends alluding to how fat you used to be with horror and implying that your current partner wouldn't be with you if you were still fat? It's pretty awful actually but it's 'humour'.

Would it be less awful if 'fat Monica' was genuinely really large though?

I stronly suspect 'thin Monica' is bulimic
