To want a VERY small wedding

DP and I have been together for 12 years and have decided that we want to get married. We have both been married before (and divorced) and have both done the big white job with 100 guests.

We are both rather shy, hate being in the limelight and we really want our wedding to be just the 2 of us. We know where we want to get married (in a place that is very personal to us) and we have talked to someone who will marry us. We really just want a private ceremony. No guests, no cakes, no presents, no meal, no seating plan, no "first dance"

But we keep having moments when we worry that our close family will feel excluded.

Has anyone else done this? and can you tell me know it went. Any advice? Thanks

I understand what you are saying crokky and Ineedacleaner and I suppose it is these thoughts that made me post in the first place, so interested in all your views.

Our thoughts are:

  1. we are both rather shy and private, so we do not want any fuss - we'd be so much more comfortable if it was just us (with my grown up dds as witnesses)
  2. we've both been married before and so feel a bit embarassed about saying "till death us do part" - again (or whatever words we choose)
  3. our parents are elderly and some have health issues, so they tend to avoid any big group celebrations anyway
  4. as soon as we start to invite people it gets massively bigger - jumps from just us to 22 people - and that really isn't what we want.
  5. organising something for 22 people is quite an event (however low key it is). We want to be married, we just aren't keen on a wedding.

Just getting my mind straight about it really. Thanks for all your input.

I know 2 couples who did the same; themselves and witnesses off the street. They took their immediate families out for dinner the following week.No one was upset; in both cases they had been living together for years.
To be completely honest, I would be happy if my DCs did that, the whole wedding thing has got out of hand!
I can only see a problem if you invite some family and not others-if you just have the 2 of you, you avoid that problem.
