I thought the same as thunder when I read the quote (but I don't know about samuel johnson and his health)

pointydog · 11/08/2009 11:27

I thought of it as strong rather than martyred/intransigent

Greensleeves · 11/08/2009 21:08

I was a bit muellered when I posted

and my degree is in history so waffle is my thing

it's a really interesting question though, I enjoyed pondering it

I didn't know about Samuel Johnson and his health problems though [ignoramus]

however I may be full of irrelevant waffling verbosity but I'm not a patch on Samuel Johnson

You could try an 'internal triumph over external failure' theme.

i.e. this may kill me but I succeeded as a person - you may take me but I will remain.

Or throw them the Johnny Cash's Highwayman:

Perhaps I may become a highwayman again
Or I may simply be a single drop of rain
But I will remain
And I'll be back again, and again and again and again and again..

Repeat up to wordcount

Noooo - don't capitulate!

SycamoretreeIsFullOfResolve · 13/08/2009 13:54

I think it's to do with fighting as hard as you can until you are overcome, i.e. conquered = noble rather than giving up under pressure, i.e. capitulating = cowardly.

The essay title is a statement of intent, and of character, but it's also making an absolute assumption that whoever, or whatever wishes to take the person over, will be successful. So it has a kind of tragic, noble quality to it, but at the same time, is rather pathetic (in true sense of the word).

BitOfFun · 13/08/2009 14:06

BitOfFun · 13/08/2009 14:08

SycamoretreeIsFullOfResolve · 13/08/2009 14:09
