PD I was just about to post te same ting I am roffling at that quote. Does anyone ever feel emotionally like an apple?

Chevre · 29/07/2009 09:11

i do see where you are coming from riven. but at 15 she had not made herself fat she had been let down by her parents and social services. i think this article has been written to enflame dailymail readers.

Chevre · 29/07/2009 09:12

pointydog - i have to admit i did snurk at that comment. she has obviously had some really bad counselling

Ledodgy · 29/07/2009 09:13

'I can't afford to buy WeightWatchers crisps and cereal bars any more so I eat Tesco's chocolate bars and packets of Space Invaders crisps, sometimes four of each a day', says Laura, who spends seven hours a day watching TV.'

This woman needs education not a bloody gastric band. Is she things eating weiught watchers crisps and cereal bars would be eating healthily!

Ledodgy · 29/07/2009 09:13

*thinks

FAQtothefuture · 29/07/2009 09:14

I think the whole article is bullshit (with a few bits of truth thrown in - probably in the wrong order, with the wrong quotes going with the wrong bits of the article).

scottishmummy · 29/07/2009 09:16

she may have had surgery but her cognition is still skewed she still has mindset of a junk food eater

weight watchers crisps are not a health option. they are still unhealth crisps - just smaller packet

TitsalinaBumsquash · 29/07/2009 09:16

If this is all true i am disgusted that some people who are in need of DLA are turned down, im talking about people with things that arent thier fault, yet a lady who has eaten herself untill she is obese can get it!?

I mean seriously what kind of system is that?

CybilLiberty · 29/07/2009 09:19

Instead of a gastric band this stupid woman clearly needs a brain transplant

scottishmummy · 29/07/2009 09:21

this story has worked a wee treat at raising the indignation factor, the what is country coming too,oh dem fatties...

look DM is as newsworthy as sunday sport , just no visible tits in the DM (only the ones who write the rabble rousing articles)

Chevre · 29/07/2009 09:23

she was fed into obesity and is now and adult so we can all point and laugh and call her stupid.

while she did not paint herself in glory with some the shite quotes she spouted i do have sympathy for her.

woodenchair · 29/07/2009 09:23

'It's heartbreaking that after all my hard work losing this weight someone's come along and ruined it.'

good grief

LuluMaman · 29/07/2009 09:29

over eating is an addiction in some cases

for her to have been that vastly overweight by the age of 15 means her family did not feed her properly

there are generations of families that just don;t cook, don't know how to cook and cannot afford to buy food they don;t know how to prepare

it is far easier to buy and eat junk or ready meals or take outs that don't need preparing or cooking

if you hvae never ever cooked or seen anyone cook or think that heating a ready meal is cooking, how can surgery really help?

think that cooking and nutrition lessons via Sure start centres etc would be a better useage of public money

being morbidly obese is disabling and it would be costlier for the NHS and tax payer for her to continue to gain weight and need treatment and meds for all the co-morbidities that go hand in hand with being morbidly obese

but the DM just want a knee jerk reaction to fat , lazy , female scroungers

SolidGoldBrass · 29/07/2009 09:31

Oh FFS the bulk of the quotes that make her look really stupid and morally defective will have been MADE UP by the Daily Fail on the grounds that the woman is too thick/browbeaten/Knowing of Her Place to sue. The whole point of features like this is to give the smug bigots something to froth about (come on, let's hate poor people, fat people, oh and women too...) not to address any serious social injustices.

ANd don;t forget that it's repeated dieting that is most likely to cause morbid obesity. People who are fairly fat but reject the big con that is the slimming industry, eat what they want and remain reasonably active, stay healthy. Healthier, in many cases, than people who stay thin by existing on coffee, fags, cocaine and the occasional diet biscuit.

CybilLiberty · 29/07/2009 09:31

I agree the services of a dietician who can give her a menu to follow within her budget would be better

pointydog · 29/07/2009 09:34

cheaper to fit a gatric band, no? Get fern onto it

MoontheMightyThreadKiller · 29/07/2009 09:35

I find it offensive so no YANBU in my view. Blah blah blah about emotional eating - what, are the rest of us not emotional? I'm a bit overweight and feel a bit shit a lot of the time but I don't sit there feeling hard done by because someone tried to help me stay alive and now I've lost some benefits that I have been claiming since I was sixteen (or whatever).

I hate the DM it's a sexist racist anti everyone piece of crap however that does not take away from the fact that this is exactly the sort of behaviour that allows that paper to exist.

ilovemydogandmrobama · 29/07/2009 09:36

Is that true about dieting SGB?

LuluMaman · 29/07/2009 09:38

yo yo dieting is a massive strain on the heart. more so than being overweight
staying the same weight even if it is overweight is actually healthier i believe. as long as you are not straying into morbidly obese territory. my ex SIL did lighter life 4 times and gained and lost 4 -5 stone in a short amount of time. not good for you

SolidGoldBrass · 29/07/2009 09:54

It's not just the strain on the heart, it's the way in which diets (particularly the stupid faddy ones) fuck your metabolism. So you stop the ludicrous fart-inducing, tooth-rotting, con-trick regime when you can;t stand it any more, gain all the weight you lost and a bit more as soon as you start eating normally because your body has gone into starvation/calorie-storing mode.
THe pursuit of thinness at all costs is very unhealthy. Being thin is not necessarily healthy at all (bad breath and rotting teeth from all that bulimia, dodgy heart from various con-trick diet pills off the internet, dodgy kidneys if you've tried Atkins too often...).
Oh (sighs wearily) don't start ranting that the above is offensive to the naturally thin - if you are naturally thin then you are unlikely to be starving yourself or taking dodgy drugs to stay that way so it doesnt apply to you. How healthy you are has fuck all to do with your body shape and size.

bigchris · 29/07/2009 09:56

sgb - how are you after mon night?

SolidGoldBrass · 29/07/2009 10:03

Bigchris - ? monday night was not notable for anything, are you mixing me up with someone else?

KingRolo · 29/07/2009 10:12

SGB is right about diets.

It's a massive and very profitable industry. If anyone found a miracle diet that really worked they wouldn't tell anyone would they because once everyone got thin that would be the end of the industry.

And apparently it's also true that you are better off health wise having a BMI slightly above the normal range then slightly below it.

Morloth · 29/07/2009 10:24

ilove Diets put your body into a feast and famine mode.

So you are a bit fat, you think 'I am going to lose this weight'. You cut your calories, your body responds by slowing your metabolism because it thinks it is in a famine stage, you use less calories in order to save what you can, if you hold out for long enough you will burn fat stores.

However, this whole time your body is screaming at you to eat, so you will eventually break and eat something fatty/salty/sugary (millions of years of evolution cannot be overcome with willpower alone). You body thinks Great! Feast time, right better put all that fat back and add some more because the famine will be back soon.

You are fat again (maybe an extra kilo or two on where you started in the first place), so you think 'I am going to lose this weight' and the cycle starts again, each time adding a little extra fat to your body for the next famine.

I know all of this because I was very fat for a very long time and ate very little for extended periods, I eventually managed to lose 75kgs but it took over 5 years and went very very slowly and I have to eat rather a lot. I don't eat many "modern" foods. Predominantly meat and veg and fruit - very very little in the way of grains etc. Even thinking about going on a diet now is enough for my body to react to.

noddyholder · 29/07/2009 10:35

The I can't afford to eat healthily line is wearing a bit thin now as it is BS Fresh fruit and veg from markets and beans pulses wholemeal bread/pasta etc are infintiely cheaper than ready meals and pre cooked crap!
