My DH has gone away on holiday and I'm banging a hole in the ceiling to see what's on the other side.

It's quite tiring though.

(In case anyone's wondering why, I want to raise the ceiling by 6 inches or so so my husband can stand up in the room without his head touching the ceiling, and I want to see if there are any exciting beams up there. My excuse is that the conservation officer came round today and told me to have a look on the ohter side of the ceiling)

Does dh know what you planned or is he in for a surprise?

It was DH who chose the house, so if he can't stand up in it, that's his problem. And he can stand up in most of it. Who needs to stand up, anyway?

And from the practical angle, there isn't a room above, and there's no access to that bit of loft (well, there is now, of course), so I was thoroughly reasonable to make a hole in the ceiling, and even more reasonable to do it while drinking a glass of wine.

He's not gone on holiday on his own - he's gone with his mum . I was invited to participate in the cycle-fest that is following the Tour de France, but felt I would rather do radical DIY unhindered.

i do stuff like this

i have not bashed holes in ceilings...but i do dig up entire lawns, decorate radically, that kind of thing...

is oddly liberating (even more oddly so as my dh is wonderful and we have a great realtionship!!)

so, you made the hole... were there nice beams of a scruffy set of joists, some old Christmas decorations and a nest of mice?

Nice set of 17th century beams and lime plastered walls.

Plus a wasp's nest - disused I hope. I thought for a horrible minute there was also a bat roosting which would totally scupper renovations, but zooming in on the camera shows it was just a bit of bunched up roofing felt.
