...to think that people who post a picture of their child as their Facebook profile are weird?

I'm not taling about people posting a picture of themselves WITH their children as their Facebook profile picture, nor about people who put pictures of their DC on Facebook. But people who put a picture of their DC (alone) AS their profile picture. Is that not weird? It's as if they had no identity of their own left... And generally: AIBU to think that there's a lot of boasting on Facebook? (as in: look at me, I've got such beautiful children and such an interesting life). Opinions?

more dramatic then shocked

HarrySaundersSphincter · 17/07/2009 22:21

Worse is a few of my Uni friends who have fantastic interests / careers and lives - vets, army guys, talented artists, people who travel the world. They don't go on about these all i get on their pages is "babyx loves his purified carrot" "bubbaW has burped today".

I'm aware of the irony that i am posting on a mum's website but that's different. I want to know how they are......

Even if i had facebook when my DSs were small i would NEVER have poster such boring crap - makes me want to weep tbh.

Geocentric · 17/07/2009 22:24

I just figure, post whatever works for you. I'm one of those annoying people who puts an avatar instead of a photo - my friends know what I look like and this way I can play around according to season/weather/occasion/mood... (a bit like MN namechanges)

Pikelit · 17/07/2009 22:31

I don't like having my picture taken and there aren't many snaps of me that I want to share with the world. But this still doesn't make me want to put images of my children up as my Facebook profile pic. It's not their Facebook profile, it's mine! If I want to share pictures of the family then I do the ever so simple thing called "making an album" on Facebook.

bluejeans · 17/07/2009 22:41

Pikelit - exactly!

devotion · 17/07/2009 23:08

now, hamsters are weird

i think this is going too deep, putting a pic of dc on fb is not trampling in on their identity and they wont need therapy for it when older.

so dont worry about it!

most people only have their friends in their list who can view their page and like i said earlier people like to see the latest shot of your child.

i agree with whoever said those pouty shots are weird. some people's fb pages are so "me, me, me" especially with the status updates, sometimes i am tempted to say, "who gives a shit".

i take all the pics in my house of dh and dd's, dh never takes any photos of me unless i ask and hate those posed awkward ones - ykwim! so i never have any of me so thats why i mainly choose dd's.

devotion · 17/07/2009 23:11

while i'm on the subject, why do people feel like they have to write something very boring in their status updates. if you have nothing interesting to say then dont bother i say.
the most annoying ones are from people who are trying to come out with something that sounds witty and clever but i just think, "Shaaa up!"

i think there should be a thread about the rules on facebook and how not to annoy people

... or maybe i'm just a bit irritable today, pregnany!

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 17/07/2009 23:14

YABU. Although I usually have a pic from pre-pregnancy where I looked thin

2shoes · 17/07/2009 23:15

yabu

FAQ, I also use m RL name on FB as lots of my RL friends and family use it too. You keep coming up as a suggested friend on my FB profile as we have common MN friends . I also get suggestions for a certain Sparkles Andwine as well

what I find amusing about FB is the number of women who have one of their wedding photos up there. I assume it's because they looked the best they have ever looked on their wedding day and are happy it's a good photo? If so I must have been having an off day as I HATE my wedding photos.

For a while, I had a photo I took of a stone as my profile pic. That, I'd admit, was a little odd. Children, YABU. It's not a dating agency.

LackaDAISYcal · 17/07/2009 23:48

pmsl at saveloy

...before realising that as a person of Northern British descent I have never even seen a saveloy, but have a good imagination

LackaDAISYcal · 17/07/2009 23:52

I used to have a pic of me with my DS1 and DD, but I got a few friend requests from one bloke saying that me and my DC looked nice and did I want to chat here . I swiftly removed the DC's pic I can tell you.

now it's just me I have no such dodgy friend requests

stitchtime · 18/07/2009 00:48

i have been known to have pictures of my niece or nephew as my profile picture..
also had ds very messy room at one point.
all depends onmy mood

Mouette · 18/07/2009 07:40

Guilty as charged - I used to have my wedding picture on there now I have a post-birth picture with DS. I do realise I need to update them more often...

YABU. Why do you let it bother you?

Suwoo, that's awful about your friend's child!

TheLadyEvenstar · 18/07/2009 07:59

Oh I like this from the article.....

The choice may seem trivial, but the whole idea behind Facebook is to create a social persona, an image of who you are projected into hundreds of bedrooms and cafés and offices across the country.

Errrr I am a mum that is who I am, teacher, cook, nurse, cleaner, dinosaur, football player, you name it i am all of them...I am my childrens support, carer, etc etc so why shouldn't i project that???

Longtalljosie · 18/07/2009 08:08

I don't give a monkeys what people put up as their profile picture (I like the hamster), and would only have people I would go for a RL pint with as friends on Facebook anyway.

But what I do find really sad is the amount of people who've said they put their children up because their self-esteem is so low they don't want to put up pictures of themselves!

Come on ladies, that's just silly. Bet you're all gorgeous

Mouette · 18/07/2009 11:45

Not to mention a Tolkien fan, judging by the name. My favourite character is Gollum. Maybe I'll put him as my profile picture. Wouldn't be far from the truth, either.

barnsleybelle · 18/07/2009 15:05
