...to think that people who post a picture of their child as their Facebook profile are weird?

I'm not taling about people posting a picture of themselves WITH their children as their Facebook profile picture, nor about people who put pictures of their DC on Facebook. But people who put a picture of their DC (alone) AS their profile picture. Is that not weird? It's as if they had no identity of their own left... And generally: AIBU to think that there's a lot of boasting on Facebook? (as in: look at me, I've got such beautiful children and such an interesting life). Opinions?

yabu
it's facebook not your CV

Mouette · 17/07/2009 19:50

On a serious note though the (provocative, admittedly) remark about identity has touched a nerve... Who are we really? What image of ourselves do we present on bookface? DEEEEP, man.

It probably is pathetic, but I have a very nice pic with a distant view of my kids on FB. It is just a much nicer pic than one of me.

HellHathNoFury · 17/07/2009 19:52

Mouette it's also harsh to suggest people have no identity.

Saying 'you need to get out more' wasn't intended to be taken so literally, it's a saying for 'haven't you got anything better to think about'

And as a matter of fact I could be posting this on my iphone while in London having a lot of hot men gyrating in front of me

devotion · 17/07/2009 19:56

HellHathNoFury - what a coincidence! thats exactly what I am doing right now

Mouette · 17/07/2009 19:58

What's an iphone?
OK, I was being provocative... Of course you all have a separate identity. I do have better things to do... If only I knew what they were...

I've got my DS as a profile pic because I don't want to see my big moon-face every time I log in to my profile. I'd much rather look at a pic of DS.

Also I'd forget what he looks like otherwise seeing as I spend a fair bit of time glued to the computer.

FAQinglovely · 17/07/2009 19:58

"What image of ourselves do we present on bookface?"

I present the image of a spade we wielding maniac determined to kill a pampas grass at all costs

devotion · 17/07/2009 20:00

Well i should be reading my dd's their bed time story or tidying up or starting dinner but with my 24 hour ms, i cant speak without feeling sick and find it easier to sit on here

chegirl · 17/07/2009 20:03

YABU

Like many pps I hate having my picture taken. I also look crap in pictures, think my kids are far more interesting to look at and am not bothered about people finding me using my picture.

Sometimes I might have a blurry pic of me. At the moment I have a particularly cute one of DS3. I usually have one of DD. Wouldnt use DS2 as I cant risk birth mum getting hold of it, wouldnt use DS1 because he wouldnt want me to.

I dont see a problem with it. I wonder more about people who want to put picutures of themselves on their profile. Its a bit like having a picture of yourself on your wall. I just wouldnt do it. (though lots of people do and I am sure they are perfectly normal )

random · 17/07/2009 20:09

YABU ..I have a piture of a shocked hamster as my pic is that ok?

digitalgirl · 17/07/2009 20:19

not everyone uses fb as an identity card - some people use it to share photos with friends and relatives. Posting your current most treasured photo as your profile pic is not unreasonable.

I think it's more weird when people change their photo often with pouty self portraits - where you can tell they're holding the camera themselves. But I guess if they're using fb to pick up dates...

canttouchthis · 17/07/2009 20:20

YA definately NBU. I think that it does emphasise that some women feel a loss of identity if they feel the need to post a pic of their DC on their FB profile.

I know someone on another big social networking site that puts her DD on her photo of her profile. It doesn't really make sense. Fair enough, have photos of your DC within the actual profile page in the Photos section, just can't get what the point of putting your own DC as your profile pic is all about..

stoppinattwo · 17/07/2009 20:27

TBH i dont think it is any of the OP's farking business what piccy is on a FB profile.....not weird at all

canttouchthis · 17/07/2009 20:29

sparkletastic made a good point about your DC not being a clone. you have your own identity, your DC have their own seperate identity away from you too. they are people in their own right.

OrangeKnickers · 17/07/2009 20:31

YANBU.

I agree - oh look you've had a baby, how clever.

And also think that 'arty' shots and seriously glammed up shots are trying too hard.

so ner.

canttouchthis · 17/07/2009 20:37

orangeknickers we must be in the minority here!

Lol.

FAQinglovely · 17/07/2009 20:39

of course they're people in their own right.

and yes I do have an indentity - me having their photo as my profile photo doesn't make me lose my identity........does it?? (how does that work??)

Chrysanthemums · 17/07/2009 20:58

I think the profile picture slot is for whatever shit you happen to enjoy looking at at that time - unless you happen to be searchable on there in whichc ase it is helpful to indicate which Lucy Jones you are out of the 3 trillion that come up.

I have got a picture of my dc on at the moment, i don't usually, it just sprang up in my photos when I needed to change the pic and didn't know what to put. Only my friends can search for me anyway, so they know who I am.

It's like wearing clothes, or something, you don't have to wear a t shirt with a picture of your FACE on it do you.

Chrysanthemums · 17/07/2009 20:58

But people with sad muppet or snoopy cartoons really annoy me for some reason.

FAQinglovely · 17/07/2009 20:59

and following on from Chrysanthemums' post - I am the ONLY person with my name on facebook (actually think I'm the only one found doing a google search too ) - so if someone knows my RL name I'm easy enough to find - don't need a photo of me to verify it's the right one - as I'm unique

Mouette · 17/07/2009 21:05

LOL canttouchthis, Orangeknickers, Chrysanthemums and FAQinglovely.
True, it's none of my business. Again, was just wondering what people thought. After all, if people put a picture on Facebook it's for me to look at - so I presumably have a right to think it's funny, weird, or irritating. Hamsters are definitely OK.

OP posts:
Mouette · 17/07/2009 21:06

I like hamsters.

Flgihtattendant · 17/07/2009 21:12
