My cousin's wedding is in Oxford in August and DH, 2DC (aged 1 and 3.5) and I were planning on going together. We live in Scotland.

I now want to change our plans and go on my own. I'm worried about exposing them unnecessarily to risk. I know that swine flu is more widespread down south and I just think it's foolish to take them to a big gathering where there'll mix with lots of new people and increase their chances of getting ill. They're too young to be bothered about missing the wedding and I can just as easily go on my own and be there for my cousin.

My DH thinks I'm completely over-reacting and everyone will think we're nutters.

Your thoughts, ladies? Am I being ridiculously paranoid or sensible?

I know I am being paranoid at a certain level - I just hear these new reports of children dying and my insides turn to lead. I haven't slept in two nights worrying about this. I'm usually very rational and nice, honest!

But, I was sort of desperately trying to come up with a solution that would minimise risk to kids (would they not be more likely to catch it as they are young and vunerable? Apparently, the striking thing about this pandemic is that it's affecting under 14s much more than usual influenza). But at same time, of course I don't want to offend my cousin and not attend his wedding.

Look, realistically your children are probably going to catch swine flu sooner or later anyway. It could be walking down the street, on a buss, a train, at school or in the park. Just because you don't expose them to one group of people isn't going to mean they won't catch it.

Other than those who have underlying health problems I think all this panicking over swine flu is hysterical and ott in the extreme.

29 people have died.

Out of those 29, only one did not have underlying health problems - as confirmed on the news this lunch time.

Tbh my view is that it's better to catch it early and build a bit of immunity before it potentially mutates and becomes worse.

You are overreacting - best way to minimise risk is to follow simple basic hygiene rules. There is NO way of avoiding contact with swine flu- unless you barricade yourself and your family in your house forever

I don't think you are stupid to be worrying - lots of people are worrying - but honestly I think it will be fine.
