I think when there are people struggling for next week's food, it can seem a little insensitive to be talking about luxuries with a specific, high value price. But it is even more not the done thing to post a thread about a thread

is that the 3K for shelves thread...not looked at it myself...because I owuld have to say Yabu and was sure I was not the only one, lol

as for price in thread heading/money mentioned in the headings...
personally I think it depends on the thread....people get pissed off when people have headings like " oh, poor woe me, can't afford a gardener, because we only earn 100K"...but in a thread like the headline I mentioend up there, I think it wouldn' be a problem!

It surely doesn't take a huge imagination to understand that asking AIBU to spend £3000 on bookshelves is insensitive to say the very least to the many Mumsnetters who live on very low wages or benefits, or who are facing redundancy or have just been made redundant.

Ok I have just been made redundant but do you know what I don't ahve a problem with you spening £3k on a bookshelf. (I quite like them)

Some people are sensitive but you can't blame them, some poeple have their homes being taken off of them, not knowing when they'll get another job etc.

Unless you are deliberately being provocative - usually obvious by the wording - then there is nothing wrong with mentioning money in this sort of context. Your quesstion was specifically about the cost of something, you weren't just chucking the money side of it in as a bit of smuggery.

If someone feels put out because they are going through financial hardship then I'm afraid they are responsible for their own reactions, no one else.

You weren't slated on the other thread, in fact from what I remember you totally ignored the other person and let someone else have a go for you!

Nothing wrong in saying how much things cost but don't be so precious about the responses.

a part of me feels it's a bit presumptuous to assume that because someone is spending a lot of money on something, that everything is ok in there lives and they must be happy.

My DD has cancer and this has been the hardest few months of my life, but I try not to make people feel bad because their kids are healthy!!

I do think that if people are going to get in a tizz about things then that's a sign they Probably Shouldn't Post On That Thread.
