to regret giving my dd a gay packed lunch?

Dd1 (12) was off on a fun school trip today with a mix of kids from high school.

I suggested a few things for her packed lunch this morning and she went off happily with a peanut butter sandwich, a fruitus bar, a kitkat, some dried apricots, a tub of home-made muesli and a bag of chipsticks.

The tuff kids laughed at her lunch - snorting particularly loudly at the apricots - and called it gay.

I feel like the mum in About A Boy.

Peer pressure at lunch is a nightmare! DS1 is 11 (fussy eater so hard to find different things for his lunch) and will not take malt loaf - apparantly it looks like poo! Pizza slice & crackers are also frowned upon - like our job's not hard enough!!

PeedOffWithNits · 30/06/2009 21:11

this is an area dialect/slang thing isn't it, because where I used to teach (north staffs) the word gay was bandied about meaning naff, boring, unfair/mean (depending on context) without having anything to do with homosexuality

they certainly did not mean that your DD was "gay", they just thought her lunch was boring/wierd

pointydog · 30/06/2009 21:11

yes, nits, everything is gay. It's a lazy, meaningless insult

lol @ SGB

my dd refuses to have celery (she loves it) because all er friends AND teachers said they hated it, so now she's too 'embarrassed' to eat it

she is 6

TrillianAstrahasaJOB · 30/06/2009 21:18

lol @ SGB here too

Hate 'oh that's so gaaaaay'. Come up with an insult that's actually insulting why don't you?

Yes it's a really crap insult... I'm surprised actually as I thought the yoof were more enlightened now - when you look at Big Brother over the past few years you're hardly allowed in if you aren't in some kind of sexuality minority.

I remember boys at my primary school 30 years ago calling each other "lesbians'" though as an insult.

But anyway - back to the pepperami. I had one for the first time the other day (blame DP) and was revolted to find they actually come with a condom on! (at least it really looks like one)

pointydog · 30/06/2009 21:59

lesbian is still an insult but not half as popular as fat

EachPeachPearMum · 30/06/2009 21:59

"sing with your eyes closed"? wtf?

I hate the use of 'gay' in this manner, seems homophobic to me.

carocaro · 30/06/2009 22:02

Hilarious. reminds me that I once put a High School Musical Frube into DS1 aged 7 lunch box. I had not even noticed what damm thing the bloody yoghurt was plugging.

I got a right telling off in the car and it was quite plainly meant for girls.

Silly Mummy.

jodee · 30/06/2009 22:02

I've heard DS say something was 'gay', (he's 9), but I didn't make an issue of it, I will have to ask him what he meant.

I would only question the muesli as a lunch option, but other than that ...!

GhostOfPsychomum5 · 30/06/2009 22:04

oooh, pointy, assuming she is not dairy-free anymore then!!

mean kids BTW.

SlartyBartFast · 30/06/2009 22:05

tell her she is not a sheep
baa

it sounded delicious

pointydog · 30/06/2009 22:06

lol @ HSM frube for ds

OP posts:
pointydog · 30/06/2009 22:07

slarty, next time she will throw dry muesli at them.

(It is home meade granola by the way. Like flapjack, just not all stuck together)

OP posts:
SlartyBartFast · 30/06/2009 22:10

sounds lovely.

write her a lickle letter for her gay lunch box next time

foxinsocks · 30/06/2009 22:11

how do they get candy floss into a packed lunch? it must be very small candy floss because if you pack it too tightly it goes into a sugary lump doesn't it

plonker · 30/06/2009 22:14

My 9yo dd wouldn't wear an Easter Bonnet in this years parade, because it was, and I quote "well gay".

Funny thing is, it lead to a discussion about homosexuality and she hadn't linked the two at all. She was meaning geeky/dorky.

Like others have said, it is a ridiculous insult, which to lots of children, means nothing to do with actually being gay.

Still to be discouraged though ...

Noonki · 30/06/2009 22:14

I told DSS to explain to my gay aunt (who spoils him rotten) why he was using the word gay as an insult... hasn't used it since

carocaro · 30/06/2009 22:16

My mums middle name is GAY.

She hates it. I tease her sometimes and say

Susan Gay Lewis - woo hooo!

She's 61 and hates Susan and likes Sue so you can really piss her off with it!

avenginggerbil · 30/06/2009 22:18

Never mind the gay bit, I'm amazed you weren't drummed out of the Good Mum's Club for allowing peanut butter. There is a possibility someone within a forty mile radius may be allergic to it.

gerontius · 30/06/2009 22:23

I'm not condoning it, but if the meaning can evolve once from "happy" to "homosexual", why can't it now change to mean "bad"?
