VinegarTits · 29/06/2009 15:31

well if i find something boring then yes, i have a short attention span, doesnt everyone

OP posts:
chaya5738 · 29/06/2009 15:31

Yeah, I agree, MrsRuffallo. I think the OP is just bored and wants a fight. I have only two weeks left til our baby is born so I am going to go read my novel while I still can and stop wasting time with this discussion.

BlackEyedDogstar · 29/06/2009 15:34

mrsruffallo · 29/06/2009 15:37

Ooh Chaya, how exciting!
Are you suffering in the heat love?

CoteDAzur · 29/06/2009 15:37

It's not really a AIBU topic. To each their own hobbies. You don't have to enjoy reading books.

If your favourite film ever is "Lord of the Rings", I'm not surprised that you prefer watching TV to reading books, by the way.

BlackEyedDogstar · 29/06/2009 15:38

aah yes and the radio times

good for you!

VinegarTits · 29/06/2009 15:39

well its not my fav film ever, is that another dig? i like lotr, oh i must be quite thick

OP posts:
BlackEyedDogstar · 29/06/2009 15:39

now 'lord of the rings' really DID bore me senseless

VinegarTits · 29/06/2009 15:40

tv quick is better

OP posts:
CoteDAzur · 29/06/2009 15:41

Just to point out how different we all are - It doesn't make sense to me that someone would find reading "boring" and would rather engage in the relatively titillating activity of...

CoteDAzur · 29/06/2009 15:43

No dig. I'm just not too bad at English comprehension. This is your post, no?

By VinegarTits on Mon 29-Jun-09 10:35:43
I dont know what the right books are, i have yet to pick up a book that has kept my interest for more than 1 chapter, even lord of the rings, which is my favorite film

notevenamousie · 29/06/2009 15:46

VT - each to their own. I am sure that reading has helped bring me out of two depressive episodes. So, it's good for me but I also found watching television vital in those up-all-night-newborn days. Maybe there are just the right times for things?

CoteDAzur · 29/06/2009 15:46

Not "thick" - nothing to do with intelligence.

But perhaps not very intellectual. Maybe you are interested in physical activity rather than intellectual pastimes.

There are many highly intelligent people who are just not interested in culture, history, books, mathematics, whatever. You might very well be one of them.

VinegarTits · 29/06/2009 15:50

I might have more patience and read when i am older

OP posts:
pagwatch · 29/06/2009 15:50

Why is someone asking if you find reading difficult because of dyslexia offensive/aggressive/insulting?

Why is dyslexia in this list of negative perceptions

"peoples perseption of me is that i must be dyslexic, ignorant, not very vocal (not to mention throwing digs in about my grammar) all because i dont enjoy a good book, i would say im not the one being ignorant here"

I don't understand.

VinegarTits · 29/06/2009 15:52

I am interested in culture and history, is it only books that contain sources of information for these subjects?

OP posts:
stillstanding · 29/06/2009 15:54

But where are you getting your culture and history, VT? Because surely not from Katie and Peter, BB etc ...

Am now thoroughly confused. Are you winding us up?!

VinegarTits · 29/06/2009 15:54

i dont enjoy reading, so someone implies i may have some form of reading disability like dyslexia, to me that is offensive, why can't i just not enjoy reading, why does not reading, suggest theres is something wrong with me?

OP posts:
JoPie · 29/06/2009 15:55

Well you don't get much culture and history in Eastenders and Big Brother do you?

Seriously, what IS your point?

crumpet · 29/06/2009 15:56

Well I am someone who cried (hormones) before dd was 2 weeks old because we didn't have any books for her and were therefore failing her, so I'm not someone who would think YANBU to the OP.

A love of reading is a gift and a privilege, so yes I do feel sorry (not in a wound up way, but I suppose slightly pityingly) for those who don't have that gift.

And I don't like houses with no books.

JoPie · 29/06/2009 15:57

And why are you suggesting that dyslexia is anything to be ashamed of, or a negative thing? I find that quite insulting actually.

VinegarTits · 29/06/2009 15:58

stillstanding, where did i say i only ever watch tv? i get my sources of information from surfing the web, travel, listening to people who have experienced such things, or come from different cultures, books are not the be all and end all of all sources of information

OP posts:
BlackEyedDogstar · 29/06/2009 15:58

I don't think VT doesn't read books because her reading is poor. is because she likes the telly better. Correct?

eg my dp likes the northern lights stuff which is like eating sand obv. Each to his own.

BarrelOfMonkeys · 29/06/2009 16:00

YANBU to not read books, each to their own, but YABU to say they are all boring. And you know it.

...Yet find myself strangely unable not to rise to the bait. You say you struggle with "even Lord of The Rings", but I would venture to say that is an example where the film is substantially better than the book - yes, it happens - Tolkein's LOTR is not reknowned for its complex characterisation, for example, and the poems and Bombadil sections would have benefited from some judicious editing, preferably with extreme prejudice. Yet books - good books - can give you a much greater richness of experience than television, IMHO. With films and TV adaptations you passively receive the director/producer's interpretation, while books are much more open to your own interpretation and active 'reading' of the text. If you've not found any books which hit the spot for you in that respect, then perhaps you need to cast your reading net a little wider?
