Had to jump in to [grr] at laquitar. We don't keep books in the living room so that everyone can be impressed by them, they're in there because they're also in the bedrooms, hallway, bathroom, and some on the stairs for when I've stripped another bookshelf.

Yes, we have too many books (annoying question from family)

Yes, between us we've read them all (dumb question from visitors)

daftpunk · 29/06/2009 12:05

oh i know you're not..

we're not mad readers, but we're both interested in politics, history, dh knows everything about world war 1 & 2...could name every plane/tank etc.....i'm more into religion (believe it or not) we probably have about 100 books....not that many really.

TrillianAstrahasaJOB · 29/06/2009 12:16

YABU - books are great!

I don't read 'Books' though, just books. Cos it's fun.

But really you could say IABU to not because is great.

OrmIrian · 29/06/2009 12:23

Same here dreadpirate. We have them everwhere or we woudn't have room. And rofl at 'study' I keep wanting to cull them - there are loads we've read once and won't again - but DH won't consider it.

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 29/06/2009 12:30

You would hate my house Laquitar. There are not only books in the living room (four bookcases full) but in every other room in the house too, including the hallway. I just counted - seven bookcases downstairs and eleven upstairs. But seriously, who could confine books to just one room of their house?

theDreadPirateRoberts · 29/06/2009 12:41

Ormirian - I dream of having a library - but I'd also need a librarian to herd them all back

blinks · 29/06/2009 12:43

it's hard to find books that aren't boring and shit.

just get a load of those fake books to prevent being labelled a thicko.

daftpunk · 29/06/2009 12:43

LGP..do you live in a house or a library?

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 29/06/2009 12:47

Many people have asked that question, DP. Let us just say that if I am out with my family and someone spots a secondhand bookshop, they take a firm grip on my arms and steer me forcefully past.

Wonderstuff · 29/06/2009 12:48

Do you find reading difficult? Many dyslexics find reading for pleasure impossible..

OrmIrian · 29/06/2009 12:48

blinks I don't totally agree with you there. It's not hard to find books that are boring and shit. There are plenty of those . But it's even easier to find loads of books that are fantastic.

daftpunk · 29/06/2009 12:50

....but you're easy to buy christmas presents for..

donnymouse · 29/06/2009 12:54

If you like being programmed by the state - keep watching.

Wake up and smell the 'george orwell'.

Oh I forgot you dont read books.

VinegarTits · 29/06/2009 13:07

I dont find it difficult to read (im not dyslexic) i do read (only if i have too)

Arf at LPG library

I'm not being programmed by the state

OP posts:
Wonderstuff · 29/06/2009 13:21

Well then clearly we are all different, each to there own and all that... I do agree with sparkle re reading books = better vocabulary, and I personally love reading, difficult to find time, but when I do I love a good book. I would make a point of reading with your children as much as possible if they are below school leaving age, because there is lots of evidence to show this is highly benefical but other than that whatever floats your boat..

VinegarTits · 29/06/2009 13:29

I dont read books as a form of entertainment, it hasnt limited my vocabulary, you dont have a wider vocabulary that i do just because i dont read books

I dont need to be encouraged to read with my dc either thanks, just because i, personally, dont enjoy books, doesnt mean i dont encourge my dc too read them

OP posts:
harleyd · 29/06/2009 13:32

well, has anyone called you a stupid ignoramus yet

VinegarTits · 29/06/2009 13:35

Not yet, but its been suggested im dyslexic, i dont allow my dc to read either, and my vocabulary is limited, oh and im being programmed by the state, so pretty much so, but not in so many words

OP posts:
Wonderstuff · 29/06/2009 13:35

Gosh you are after a fight today aren't you?

'Research has shown that past the 4th grade, the number of words a person knows depends primarily on how much time they spend reading (Hayes & Ahrens, 1988; Nagy & Anderson, 1984; Nagy & Herman, 1987; Stanovich, 1986). In fact, by the time they reach adulthood, people who make a habit of reading have a vocabulary that is about four times the size of those who rarely or never read. This disparity starts early and grows throughout life...'link

Didn't mean to be patronising, but what response were you hoping to get from this thread? Well done you, the TV is so much more enlightening?

[walks away]

talbot · 29/06/2009 13:38

But what is it you are you watching on Television that is so interesting that you don't need books in your life?

Wonderstuff · 29/06/2009 13:38

And I object to you linking dyslexia and being stupid.

I really am going to find something better to do now. I might even read the paper

VinegarTits · 29/06/2009 13:41

You say up to 4th grade, you see when i was a child i did read books, i was encouraged to read books and i had to read books (for educational purposes) i never enjoyed it, as an adult i can choose not to read books because i dont enjoy it, its just not my thing

I didnt link dyslexia with being stupid, i object to being linked with dyslexia because i dont read books

Oh god i couldnt read a newpaper, all that messing ink on your fingers

I read the news on the internet though, but thats not the same as reading a book, i didnt say i never read, i said i dont read books, for entertainment that is

OP posts:
Wonderstuff · 29/06/2009 13:45

Read it again (sigh) not up to the 4th grade but PAST the 4th grade, the disparity starts early and GROWS THROUGHOUT LIFE... (I have no idea why I am bothered).
