I went to brighton last weekend. was a fab place, really enjoyed it, met with the fab MN crowd, shopped, generally had a Very Good Time HOWEVER

I seem to have missed the memo telling me that it is the gay capital of the world....didn;t phaze me, I was just completely stunned......never actaully knew there was such a place where people (and I mean everyone in this, it was so relaxing and friendly there) could be so open. and dress how they want...etc.

DH has taken my innocence to mean that everyone can pick on me and laugh at me.............it IS meant in the nicest possible way, and I am laughing too (while feeling a tad silly), but when his best mate ring up this morning, and chortles down the phone at me about it, then yells to his wife and I hear HER laughing............well, I feel a teeny bit sorry for myself now that I am clearly a person to be made fun of just cos I am that innocent.

please tell me I am not the only person tho that really is that dim that I really didn;t know........I think a whole world of knowledge is simply passing me by now simply to give people a giggle

oh tell him to grow up ffs.
brighton has a lot of gay people in it, but also a lot of straight people.
he seems to have a buit of a problem tbh

cornsilk · 27/06/2009 11:03

Why are they laughing at you about that? Very strange.

Nancy66 · 27/06/2009 11:08

I'm not sure it IS the gay capital of the world - the UK, yes.

Goblinchild · 27/06/2009 11:09

He needs to get over it, it might have been funny for a while, but he's being a prat if he lets it run and run. Teen humour at its worst.
It's one of the reasons that makes Brighton a laid back reasonably non aggro-based city, unlike many of the others I've lived in or near.
Both my straight teens love it and the atmosphere and have roamed happily unaccompanied since they were 12 or so.
It's a lovely city and I'm delighted that you enjoyed it.

GhostOfPsychomum5 · 27/06/2009 11:09

they are laughing cos I simply didn;t know, and everyone knows apparently

tis getting to me now..........he reckons he told me, I claim otherwise.........but then, it really doesn;t bother me anyway what a person is like........so maybe it never really entered my psyche to be conscious of it IYGWIM.

I just was more stunned I have to say about how lacking in judgement it all was in brighton compared to bournemouth. was refreshing, but makes me think a lot of bournemouth people have 'cats bum' faces now

OP posts:
Pan · 27/06/2009 11:14

manchester IS the gay capital of the UK!! Brighton is just our fag hag.....

sounds like pathetic, insecure point-scoring by dh. Ignore the chump.

MummyDragon · 27/06/2009 11:16

Well, I live in Bournemouth and I don't have a cat's bum face ... !!!

Nancy66 · 27/06/2009 11:18

wouldn't san francisco be the gay capital of the world?

Thunderduck · 27/06/2009 11:18

The gay capital of the world? I don't think so.

Anyway even if it was, why are they laughing about that, and about you going there?

Nighbynight · 27/06/2009 11:21

Well I had never heard that either. Why is it important enough to laugh about?

junglist1 · 27/06/2009 11:23

Silly to laugh at you. My dad took my brother to the West End when bro was about 14, Dad would have been late 40's. He mistakenly took into a gay coffee shop and the looks he was getting!!! When he realised what a perv he looked he was well

hannahsaunt · 27/06/2009 11:25

It's not a bit deal - just one of those things - bit like dh spending a week telling everyone about how how I wanted to call ds2 John Thomas having absolutely no idea at the tender age of 28 that it was a common euphemism for boy nether regions

GhostOfPsychomum5 · 27/06/2009 11:27

probably just cos they can laught TBH.

pan...am liking the 'fag hag'

mummydragon, why you not come on any of the meetups then?? or have you and I don;t remember

thunderduck, part of me wonders if it is just that he hated me going (would have done the same about me going anywhere I think....he not a fan of me swanning off places at the moment, probably because I am that accident prone he thinks I will find anyway of injuring myself)............but, he is off to portsmouth in a little while for a night out with the boys..........him laughing I think is also serving at me not moaning at him about going, just flouncing off about the laughin (IYGWIM)

Goblinchild · 27/06/2009 11:28

I used to live in Manchester. Did nine years. Hated it, way too aggressive and no place to be caught with a Southern accent after dark.
Nope, Brighton is the gay capital of the UK, Manchester just has a few refuges where you can be true to your nature if you're gay. But be careful where you stray.

Thunderduck · 27/06/2009 11:29

He doesn't like you to go out?

Haribosmummy · 27/06/2009 11:30

Surely Manchester is the Gay capital of the UK? The Gay Pride in Manc is BRILLIANT!!

And SF is, by far, the gay capital of the world. I spent my honeymoon there and IT'S ONE OF THE BEST PLACES ON EARTH

Goblinchild · 27/06/2009 11:32

Is this going to turn into a 'More Gay than thou thread?'
Hope he has fun in Portsmouth with all those sailors. Is the fleet in?

Nancy66 · 27/06/2009 11:33

Brighton is def gayer than Manchester - Manchester does has one specific gay area but the whole of Brighton is gay.

GhostOfPsychomum5 · 27/06/2009 11:36

thunderduck, he lets me, he doesn;t argue (and I just go anyway), but no, he doesn;t like it.

TBF, he has a point...........3 car accident where people seem to drive into me, stupid accidents where I just fall off pavements, down steps etc.......kill myself with allergies (actually, he is the only one to have tried that).........yeah, he hates me going, in case he gets 'that phonecall' from the hospital

OP posts:
GhostOfPsychomum5 · 27/06/2009 11:37

lol @ goblinchild..........oh that would be funny

so, brighton is still the capital then???

OP posts:
FAQinglovely · 27/06/2009 11:39

well I had heard that Brighton was the gay capital of the UK.

Goblinchild · 27/06/2009 11:40

Took the train one day with my delicious and very pretty 15 year old daughter. It was crammed to the max with young men of a certain age, all done up in their Saturday best.
Got off 30 minutes later without a single sexist comment, grope, proposition or anything else to disconcert hr.
They were on their way to the Pride celebration. They also smelled a lot better that a carriage full of commuters.

itwasntme · 27/06/2009 11:41

God, tell him to grow up.

So what is you didn't know that there were lots of gay people in Brighton. Why should you?

Haribosmummy · 27/06/2009 11:42

I'm with the OP then, I didn't know Brighton was particularily gay...

GhostOfPsychomum5 · 27/06/2009 11:43

see.......you all pretty much know!!

I ma really that dim then

he still shouldn;t laugh tho...he should take pride in my ability to now care.

goblinchild, they do indeed smell pretty good I must say, going on my experiences last weekend
