To Think The Occasional Greggs Sausage Roll Aint that Bad?

Posting this because I was shamed out my usual judgeyness yesterday.
I had just been to Greggs and bought a sausage roll. Standing at the bus stop a mum in front me with two kids had also been to Greggs and was rummaging in the bag to give her purchase to the kids.
I thought "I bet they're sausage rolls" because she was telling them they might be hot. They were.
I moved aside to let a buggy pass and saw the wee girl, an absolutely gorgeous blonde thing about 2-3. Her older brother was also tucking in. The wee girl smiled at me. I said "They're nice arent they?"
Then the wee girl held out her sausage roll to me with a huge grin.
DD does this - sharing.
I said "No thats ok look I've got one!"
I was quite touched. I looked at the Mum, who was a wee bit harrassed and saw a Mum trying to give some much needed calories to her kids. She smiled and made an indulgent comment about her DD liking to make a mess.

I felt ashamed TBH. Whats wrong with the occasional sausage roll anyway? Better that than sweets.

I allow my children to have the occasional mcd's, sausage rolls and will even admit to the occasional fruitshoot too.

However, dd1's favourite snack is a glass of milk, banana and some oatcakes!!

Will pack my bags and leave mumsnet now

I'm worse than a fruit shoot/greggs roll feeding mother by a MN mile. DS would not be weaned at 6 months, refused to eat more than the occasional nibble of bread, was driving me farking frantic. I, um, tried him on strawberry icecream. What? It was organic!

He loved it. Couldn't get the spoon in fast enough. Total glee. Two weeks on, and he's eating watermelon, roast beef, yoghurt, apple, bread, broccoli, cheese, gnocci, green beans, fishcakes... so sod the rules and the healthy-eating-at-all-times. It worked! He twigged that food was his friend, and Lord knows, that made it mine.

You know what, I am happy to give my DS a Greggs sausage roll.

He is a notoriously bad eater (did all the right weaning stuff).

We go to swimming lessons once a week on a Friday and shock horror, I give him a Greggs sausage roll on the way home because he is always starving after the lesson and I know he will eat it all! I even - shock horror - sometimes let him eat it in his buggy! I used to take sandwhiches with us but sometimes he just simply won't eat them.

I used to have an aversion to giving kids sausage rolls, especially in buggies (I am originally from the North East, where kids seem to be constantly sucking on them whilst being pushed around town, usually in a white lacy pram thing, covered in gold jewellery).

I was incredibly judgey about such things until DS turned into such a fussy eater and now, you know what, I am just happy he eats something with such gusto and as he only has one a week then I don't see any problems with it! Oh, and I also get a veggie pasty to munch on as well - happy days!

I worked for Greegs for nine years! [ hell on earth emoticon}
The best bakes they ever did were the Chicken Tikka ones, they were to die for, i think i used to eat 2 a day!
Now the Lemon Muffins are just fabulous!!!!!

KingRolo · 19/06/2009 10:42

The cheese and onion pasties were better in ye olden days when it was called Thurstons.

Morloth · 19/06/2009 11:31

I hope you lot are happy, today I am going to the pie shop - it won't be Greggs cause there isn't one there.

I am not sure DS has ever had a sausage roll, will remedy this immediately.

Personally I have found saturated fat (and fat of all descriptions!) to be my friend in getting fit.

scottishmummy · 19/06/2009 11:36

yes dont neglect your wean pop a sausage roll in his yap. right now

he will thank you for it

Stayingsunnygirl · 19/06/2009 12:23

My weans are at school, scottishmummy - should I rush out and buy sausage rolls right now and leave them at the school offices for them, or shall I just trust to the fact that the older two will choose sh*te in the canteen and the youngest will stop at the coop on the way home for something full of chemicals and additives. [despairing mum emoticon]

scottishmummy · 19/06/2009 12:30

run like the wind to school and make impassioned plea to interrupt lessons to give em a sausage roll and can o ginger

Stayingsunnygirl · 19/06/2009 12:44

scottishmummy!

dawntigga · 19/06/2009 16:47

I hope your all happy I bought a sausage roll today and ate it - technically as I'm BF so will my son.

I blame you lot

dxx

Stayingsunnygirl · 19/06/2009 18:00

Well actually I am not happy, dawntigga - because I didn't get a sausage roll today - just a healthy avocado and mozzerella and tomato salad with basil.

sunfleurs · 19/06/2009 18:12

Here is a question for Greggs. I love the Ham and Cheese Bakes. Not available in any of my local Greggs here in London. However went up to Derbyshire on holiday for a couple of weeks - Ham and Cheese Bakes in every single Greggs. I don't get it. Why would they only sell a variety by area? I am intensely irritated by it actually.

Morloth · 19/06/2009 18:14

Do you know I couldn't find a bloody sausage roll! I blame Mumsnet for my wandering around Westfield in search of pastry.

Ended up having a burger instead, it was tasty but it wasn't a sausage roll and my poor boy is still uninitiated.

sunfleurs · 19/06/2009 18:15

There is a Greggs just round the corner from Westfield if you come out of the Debenhams entrance, what a shame to be so near and still miss out .

sunfleurs · 19/06/2009 18:17

I remember attending an important court case in Aylesbury, it went on for 5 days. I remember each day watching the clock around lunch time because there was a Gregg's right near the court house. I had a Ham and Cheese Bake every day of the case.

scottishmummy · 19/06/2009 19:23

haha longing for a greggs.perfectly legitimate
