To Think The Occasional Greggs Sausage Roll Aint that Bad?

Posting this because I was shamed out my usual judgeyness yesterday.
I had just been to Greggs and bought a sausage roll. Standing at the bus stop a mum in front me with two kids had also been to Greggs and was rummaging in the bag to give her purchase to the kids.
I thought "I bet they're sausage rolls" because she was telling them they might be hot. They were.
I moved aside to let a buggy pass and saw the wee girl, an absolutely gorgeous blonde thing about 2-3. Her older brother was also tucking in. The wee girl smiled at me. I said "They're nice arent they?"
Then the wee girl held out her sausage roll to me with a huge grin.
DD does this - sharing.
I said "No thats ok look I've got one!"
I was quite touched. I looked at the Mum, who was a wee bit harrassed and saw a Mum trying to give some much needed calories to her kids. She smiled and made an indulgent comment about her DD liking to make a mess.

I felt ashamed TBH. Whats wrong with the occasional sausage roll anyway? Better that than sweets.

Not a fan of their sausage rolls since they went "large" but I am partial to their sausage and bean melts

Junglist - apple and blackberry pastries! They don't have them in our Greggs!

Morloth · 18/06/2009 18:35

Sure, set it into a jelly or whatever with a bit of butter and I am there.

I will also happily suck the brains out of prawn heads I am afraid. I had a somewhat "wild" childhood

differentID · 18/06/2009 18:37

I want some now!!!!!!!!!

LadyAga · 18/06/2009 18:43

Noooooooooooooo... really? or are you trying to make me vomit all over my laptop?

God, I hate it when I am served King Prawns with the heads on, I always end up with brain mush under my fingernail.... bleurgh.

BTW way can I just make it clear that I am being squeamish not snobbish!

LadyAga · 18/06/2009 18:45

ha! Don't why I capitalised King Prawns, it's not like they were ever a monarch.

Stayingsunnygirl · 18/06/2009 18:52

My dh buys 5 lemon yumyums at a go from Greggs, eats them, and declares that that is his 5-a-day. What makes it worse is that he doesn't put weight on, whereas I just have to think about a yumyum to gain weight. In fact, reading this thread has made me gain nearly 4 pounds.

GentlyDidIt · 18/06/2009 18:54

I like the proper noun-ness of King Prawns

I bought a sausage roll from a random corner shop near a friend's house today because of this thread. It was quite dry and the sausage meat tasted quite sausagey. I feel badly let down I tell you, badly.

Morloth · 18/06/2009 19:09

There is nothing more annoying then allowing yourself a "naughty" treat and then having it not up to scratch - my sympathies GentlyDidIt LadyAga you should try it, they taste good. Have also been known the then grind the shells/heads and use it to make shrimp paste for thai curries.

GentlyDidIt · 18/06/2009 19:14

Thank you Morloth.

It was £1.70. I should have remembered that you get what you pay for (I believe they are 60p in Greggs)

ilovesprouts · 18/06/2009 19:19

my ds2 loves sausage roll from greggs and fruitshoots

random · 18/06/2009 19:30

A greggs sausage roll ...followed by a greggs lemon muffin ...perfectly balanced lunch

TeaOneSugar · 18/06/2009 19:39

giraffesCantRunA10k have you tried Linda McCartney sausage rolls, yummy.

Greggs Cheese & Onion Pasties - greasy and yummy - too many syns on Slimming World .

victoriascrumptious · 18/06/2009 19:45

I'm sorry but I think anyone who feeds their child sausage rolls is guilty of child neglect. Saturated fat hardens the arteries, clogs the pores and ultimately will produce the sort of child who LOOKS like they eat Greggs food. i.e spotty skin, foul mouthed, greasy hair-sallow skin sporting yobs.

AMumInScotland · 18/06/2009 19:58

Oh, right, yeah, one sausage roll now and then does all that.

What happened to concepts like "a balanced diet" and "moderation in all things"?

Parents who feed their children a constant diet of saturated fat may need some education about the problems, but they may also be trying to keep their children from going hungry on a very limited budget.

Those of us who have them as an occasional treat don't need prissy little lectures on how we are unfit parents.

Middleclass mothers are more likely to end up damaging their children by subjecting them to "muesli-belt malnutrition" where they never see enough fat to get the vitamins they need. Making them feel an occasional treat is a terrible sin does no-one any favours.

AitchTwoOh · 18/06/2009 20:04

i don't actually like the taste of the greggs ones, dh buys them occasionally and they do stink the place out a bit. the meat has that mechanically recovered pureed texture, i think.

however, my butcher makes his own sausagemeat (nothing mechanically recovered) and his sausage rolls are great.

but the whole mn greggs thing is a joke, anyway, so there's nothing wrong with them imo, if you like them.

babyphat · 18/06/2009 20:05

how does eating sausage rolls make you foul mouthed? and how do you LOOK foul mouthed? do tell

LadyAga · 18/06/2009 20:06

I don't get the impression that anyone on here would feed their children sausage rolls as a staple in their diet.

This is a light-hearted thread which I am finding quite refreshing and enjoyable after all the drama lately.

I wouldn't feed my DC's sausage rolls as I wouldn't feed them something that I wouldn't eat myself. I agree that they are unhealthy but I think it takes a lot more than a greggs sausage roll to turn someone into a yob!

starlightexpress · 18/06/2009 20:12

as David Mitchell comments in in Black Swan Green , "Sausage rolls start off tasting lovely but by the time you finish them they taste like peppery pig bollock."

I am inclined to agree with him.

smallorange · 18/06/2009 20:13

lol at Victoria

GentlyDidIt · 18/06/2009 20:36

A favourite book of mine starlightexpress

What a great memory for quotes you have!

Wigglesworth · 18/06/2009 20:54

Nowt up with sausage rolls every now and then. Prefer meat and potato pie myself. I love black pudding too, the sweepings off the butchers floor, mmm eyeholes, earholes and arseholes.

victoriascrumptious · 18/06/2009 21:00

AmuminScotland:
I hardly think a sausage roll can be considered as part of a balanaced diet. Well, perhaps it is in Scotland, but then i'm not au fait with Scottish culture having tried to avoid the place for the past 30yrs.

Babyphat: It's really easy to spot a yob-just station yourself outside of Greggs (if you can bear it) and look for the hooligans holding the sausage rolls
