AIBU to hate ear piercings on toddlers

SunisShinin · 17/06/2009 18:47

Every time i see them it makes my blood boil. Its a visual message that says -'I didn't love you enough just the way you were so I've caused you physical pain and risked future infection and / or injury to stick this lump of metal in your ear and now you meet my aesthetic standards' - aaaaaaahhhhhhhhh. How could they do it to them.

That's nice, dear.

BBisfinallyPG · 17/06/2009 18:48

most palces wont do it now to liluns will they?

pinkstarfish · 17/06/2009 18:49

here we go again.....

pinkstarfish · 17/06/2009 18:50

for the record, I agree, but this debate is as old as my MIL's false teeth

BBisfinallyPG · 17/06/2009 18:50

oh have i been trolled?? bugger

girlandboy · 17/06/2009 18:50

Well, I don't quite agree with your sentiments, and I certainly wouldn't put it the way you have done.

However, I don't like to see it. But I wouldn't say it's because their parents don't love them enough.

MummyDragon · 17/06/2009 18:50

Clare's Accessories do it - I've seen them in action.

In some cultures it is the norm to pierce kids' ears ...

I wouldn't do it to my kids though!

MummyDragon · 17/06/2009 18:52

pinkstarfish - those of us who don't spend all day, every day on MN would not know that this topic had been debated before on MN, would we?! Should we all be scrolling through the MN archives before respondong to a post? Do stop being so superior, there's a dear.

SunIsShinin - actually, I think YABabitU.
I think you are over-analysing people's motives.
As MummyD says, it is a cultural norm in lots of places.
And I think it can look quite pretty.
I can't get that worked up over two tiny ear-holes, but I did wait until my DD was able to make the choice for herself.

Frasersmum123 · 17/06/2009 18:56

MummyDragon - you dont have to spend much time on any site like this to know that a debate like this is going to cause a fall-out. Its like the breast/bottle debate, or various others!

YANBU - its awful

pinkstarfish · 17/06/2009 18:57

FGS mummydragon don't be so damn rude. This debate has been on pretty much every internet forum going, are you seriously telling me you've NEVER had this debate before?

I'm recently new to MN, and I can assure you I do not spend all day, every day on here. I do actually have a life so I would appreciate if you didn't make assumptions about me seeing as you don't even know me.

I'm not being superior, but maybe you should stop being such a patronizing smug idiot.

NormaSknockers · 17/06/2009 18:58

I wouldn't have put it the way that you have but no, YANBU as I really dislike seeing babies/toddlers with their ears pierced.

I wasn't allowed to have my ears pierced til I was in secondary school & the same will stand for my DD/DS

LightShinesInTheDarkness · 17/06/2009 18:58

BALD - what's with the 4?

LightShinesInTheDarkness · 17/06/2009 18:59

pinkstar - I have never seen this debate before.

McSnail · 17/06/2009 18:59

No, I don't like it either. I'm a bit of a snob that way. Neither do I like children in designer wear, or little boys with those tram-line things in their hair.

pinkstarfish · 17/06/2009 19:00

lightshines - here's you chance to dive right in then. Enjoy

LightShinesInTheDarkness · 17/06/2009 19:06

pinkstar - actually, i think you are the one being rude here.

Why on earth did you click on a thread called 'AIBU to hate ear piercings on toddlers' if it was a topic you are not remotely interested in? Then just come in with a patronising post which basically just puts the OP down. I don't get it.

Why not ignore it and leave the debate to people who are have either not seen it before, or want to contribute even if they have?

pinkstarfish · 17/06/2009 19:08

It was merely my opinion. The post above my OP doesn't have any interest in the post, why not string her up to? When mummydragon said her piece I responded.

JessJess3908 · 17/06/2009 19:14

YABU - It's the norm in western culture for women to have one hole in both ears. Also, the girls I knew who had their ears pierced in later life had trouble with infections - much more so than those of us who had our ears pierced in early childhood. Therefore, I think it would be best to get our little girls done now so that body piercing doesn't become a big issue when she approaches her teens and she doesn't suffer with infections etc

Unfortunately DP thinks YANBU so I'm not allowed to. Grrr...

YANBU.

And infections are more likely to be an issue in a child who has her ear pierced by someone who has had an hour or two's training, using a gun which crushes the tissue, than they are in a teen or adult who can attend to her own care and who is likely to have it done by a professional piercer with a hollow needle.

I had my ears pierced when I was 3. I didn't want it to be done. They closed up after a few weeks, though I can still feel the mark, as I didn't like them. I've had no desire to have my ears pierced since then and never will.
It should be the child's decision when they are old enough.

Frasersmum123 · 17/06/2009 19:31

TBH I agree that YANBU but I am agreeing because its a lack of choice for the poor child, rather than that it looks awful
