I do think we tend to prefer whatever our own babies are like. Mine have both been fairly lean so thats my preference.

My friend has a gorgeous but petite 8 month old and I've been out with her today and got lots of comments on how she needs 'meat on er bones' etc.

They don't need to but when they are exclusively breastfed and enormous there's not a lot you can do about it. DD2 was particularly cuddly.

None of mine have been Michelins. Nicely rounded, with a bare minimum of chub. I do think that Michelin babies are gorgeous, though!

I just hate the asumption that plump means healthy, skinny means not.

people said that to me about my tiny dd1 who was seriously ill with a chronic condition.
dd2 was and is also tiny and comments like that used to make me doubt myself.

People are always shocked to hear my dD talk / see her fling herself onto the monkey bars in the park as she is tiny for her age.

My boys were huge, DS1 put on a lb a week from three weeks old, when we looked at his baby pictures recently we were at how big he was. All I got were people asking what I was feeding him, "hilarious" jokes about bottling my breast milk ETC
DS1 is a skinny 5 yr old now.

I just think all comments like this are annoying, particularly if you're a new Mom.

These days I have to be physically removed from petite girl babies, they are so different to what I have been used to and I am a tad broody atm.

I think YABU. What do you mean they don't have to be like the michelin man? Of course they don't have to but some of them do despite their parents' best efforts (and some of them are really skinny again despite their parents best efforts). For the life of me I cannot see why someone would be that interested in how chubby or skinny a baby is unless they're way off the scales & there's a nutritional problem of some kind. I get slightly pissed off by this sort of comment because my DS has always been above 60 percentile & he's also very very tall (95th percentile) so people keep making comments about 'how big' he is & to be honest it annoys me a bit & makes me anxious sometimes (although I know that most times they just mean he's tall & strong looking). I'm sure I would be equally pissed off if my baby happened to be smaller & people made comments about that all the time. But generally I kind of hate it when people go on & on about appearances...

Anyway. Mini-rant over

Its daft how people obcess about weight of babies. Especially as some people seem to think its an achievement to have a child on the 98 percentile.

Anyone would think that babies were turkeys being fattened up for Christmas.

Thats true on the flipside a friend of mine has a daughter who at just over 2 looks like a four year old, she gets nasty comments about her behaviour/ not being polite etc.

Strangers should but out I think is the moral of the story...

ReallyTired: Exactly! In most cases it's completely out of our hands how are babies look / what they weigh etc. Obviously I'm not talking about pathological cases but even with pathological cases, things so often sort themselves out just by natural development! I find it really depressing how fixated we all are on how the body looks...and we start this from as early as babyhood for god's sake.

The boy was a lean, but I love chubbly babies, I just want to squeeze their lovely round legs. A girlfriend of mine has the loviest cuddliest little michelin baby ever, she is just so SOFT!

And when is that magical age where chubby changes to be a bad thing? Surely all children balance out at some age, unless they have a horrific diet/ medical issues.

Both were over 98th centile here, DS2 keeps being asked if he's looking forward to school and he's 3. If he has a tantrum I have had people ask why he hasn't grown out of them yet (he was 10lb 11oz at birth though)
I do remember being ever so embarrassed about them being so big, as if I was giving them a sneaky kitkat or something at 8weeks old. And I am 5ft 9" and the wrong side of a size 12 so I felt it was a criticism of me for not being exactly waif-like.

Well, I've had one very chubby DD (altho she's thinning out now) and one skinny little DS (although starting to chub out a bit). Both gorgeous. Both fed the same and both born early.
YAB a little U- but agree that boasting that you have a humungous baby is a little ridiculous.

DS1 was almost 4 when he slimmed down, now he is long and lean.
DS2 still pretty round at 3, he is far more sedentary but he doesn't eat much at all.

DS1 was the skinniest boy. Still is at 5! As a baby you could see all his ribs and his arms and legs were like twigs.

DS2 is a huge chubster, the fattest baby I've ever seen!

Funny how different they are.

I agree with Reallytired mums seem to be "proud" of their child is at the top/off the chart of the centile charts. Like it is an acheivment like crawling, walking etc.

HV's do not help this by constantly weighing babies and congratulating new mums on babies excellent weight gain!!
