jewellery on E-Bay like this is a load of old nonsense?

I would find that difficult to answer because although I definately felt some very strong things when I was attuned to Reiki, and believe it works wonders for many people, I'm not sure I believe it works in the way it is claimed to.
I stopped my Okuden training (the second round of training you do in order to practice in Reiki) because I became convinced that the nurturing nature of the laying on (or off as in some Reiki) of hands was what something that some people needed, and possibly more responsible for them feeling better than an actual energy. It could release certain chemicals in a person's body for all we know and I knew that even though people benefitted from me giving Reiki, I didn't believe in the core beliefs of it IYSWIM so shouldn't do it - I'm a mixture of spiritual and cynical in equal measures!

Here's an official explanation:
"Reiki has been described as an intelligent energy, travelling to any source that needs healing. This energy is channelled by a practitioner who has been attuned to Reiki by a Reiki Master.

It is believed that Reiki is channelled from the universe through the crown, flowing down the head and shoulders, along the arms and transmitted through the practitioner's hands into the recipient. This healing process replenishes energy depleted areas, stimulating the body's natural ability to heal itself and balancing the mind, body & spirit. This is also called holistic healing."

UnquietDad · 17/06/2009 21:05

You put the energy in
You take the energy out
You do the reiki-cokey
And you shake it all about
And that's what it's all about

Ooh!

Lotster · 17/06/2009 21:12

Arf!

LightShinesInTheDarkness · 17/06/2009 22:37

so - how does all that it in with people selling items that are 'Reiki blessed'?!

OP posts:
Lotster · 17/06/2009 22:54

Well essentially that it's bollocks I think!

moondog · 17/06/2009 22:57

I love the juxtaposition of this

'I am a Qualified Reiki Practitioner, i will Reiki Cleanse, Bless and Charge this cord for you, if you would like specific intention

please say'

with this

'I have just sold our shop in lynton and am clearing stock'

(ie No gu;llible fuckers in Lynton will buy my crap)

at UQD.

northernrefugee39 · 18/06/2009 13:16

Thanks Lotster for your reply.
I still can't swallow the energy that's chanelled though.
It falls into the "faith healing" catagory for me.
So if it works for some people, good luck to them.

Agree with you about the "reiki blessed bollocks" bit though.
What would happen to bollocks if they were reiki blessed I wonder?

Lotster · 18/06/2009 15:57

This is why I couldn't continue - I felt that some people just need a bit of attention / affection (I suppose healing is that, of sorts) and their own bodies and minds do the rest. Couldn't practice something I didn't believe in!

Thank you for the mental image of reiki blessed bollocks btw.

Stigaloid · 18/06/2009 16:00

Hmmm i am a seichim master, which is the female version of the reiki energy and even i am suspect of this jewellrey malarkey. Whilst you can definitely feel the benefits of reiki in terms of unblocking energy etc i do also think there are a load of 'practioners' out there who don't know what planet they are on. Anyway, Reiki is about energy - i don't see how you can bless something with it

brightonlad · 18/06/2009 16:20

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reiki#Scientific_research

Reiki has been conclusively shown to be a completely bogus form of healing which has absolutely no effect on the person being treated.
Another money making scheme that's sucked too many people in and got out of hand.
Look up Ben Goldacre and AIDS denialism in Africa or MMR panic if you want to see the terrifying end results of this kind of idiocy,

northernrefugee39 · 19/06/2009 12:26

Lotser- yes, that's it; people are given attention, time, touch, warmth listened to. The placebo effect is very strong.
And then of course, they're paying huge amounts of money for it; so it would be foolish if they didn't believe it would work.

brightonlad- are you sure you're happy with the word "bogus" ?

Totally agree, btw that reiki is nonsense

Lotster · 19/06/2009 13:29

I must say though, if it gives them what they need it isn't necessarily a bad thing, and in a way, it works. Just not in the way it's supposed to.
