WAIBU to have given my sons hampster away and told him its died?

my MIL got my son a hampster for his birthday unfortunatly he is 3 years old and cannot possibly look after it. I dont have enough time to be bothered with a hampster and tbh i dont like them

was i unreasonable to give it away and tell him it was deceased?

they really dont require much looking after

It's a bit unimaginative. You could have told him the hamster had had a midlife crisis and gone off to find himself. Had joined the navy or the foreign legion, met up with another hamster and lived happily ever after working in disney cartoons.

I have a hamster and she brings me and the kids (and hubby!) nothing but joy! The kids are ages 1 to 3... they absolutely adore him! They can also get involved in the cleaning of the cage, giving water and food etc too.

They are not much work at all. But even if they were more work... the joy they bring the kids alone is enough for me to keep my little hamster

Er, at what age do you think kids do look after their hamsters themselves?! Yes you were being very unreasonable. They don't take much looking after and you clean their cage with your child so they learn how to care for an animal.

However, I think your MIL was even more unreasonable. You should never ever EVER buy someone a pet as a surprise present.

Could you not have handed it back to her (claimed an allergy or phobia or something) and suggested she keep it at her house so your DC could see it when visiting?

I think you should give the hamster to your MIL to look after and say to your DS that he can visit the hamster at MILs house.

She shouldn't have bought a pet without asking you, but seeing as she has, hamsters are not much work - can you really not find the time?

yes mil should have checked with you, ANYONE should check before buying a pet for someone else - so maybe hammy can live with her

who did you give it to?

they are easy to look after (easier then children ) and bring great joy
