I'm not saying he's fantastic - in fact I know he's had some severe failures - but lots of politicians have no business experience at all - or like boris were employed by business but didn't actually do anything.

I too don't think Sir A is a glowing example of business acumen, his past few years have been distinctly rocky (admittedly he's not alone in that)

YABU. He isn't "in government", he has been appointed a business tsar by a failing PM who is trying to win back public votes in time for the inevitable general election that will probably have been called by October.
Sralan is just a publicity stunt by the government and will probably be quietly dropped by the next PM.

It demonstrates why we need sweeping reform to our current political system.

I think it's utterly outrageous that someone can be given the right to vote on all kinds of legislation for the rest of their life just because the PM is in a bit of a tight spot at the moment.

Whatever his personal strengths and weaknesses he's not been elected, he's being put there on the say so of a PM who wasn't even elected to that role. What bothers me is not so much that he gets to make enterprise policy for the last few months of this government, it's that he gets to vote on everything from immigration policy to maternity rights and equality legislation for the rest of his life.

I believe he is being awarded the peerage so he will be part of government, he's not in the cabinet but the idea is certainly that he should be part of government, hence the peerage.

I thought they hadn't confirmed the peerage, just stated it may lead to one.

It's being fairly widely reported and not denied in any way, that has been situation in the past.

Well I guess it's not confirmed in the sense that officially it is the Queen's decision and that she is merely advised by the PM but given she always acts on the advice of the PM that is just a technicality. They couldn't give him a Govt role unless he was in one of the Houses of Parl so he has to have a peerage.

I prefer to listen to someone who worked his way up from nothing rather than some over-privileged Eton educated sop who has no empathy with the ordinary working person on the street.
