Yes it's today.

There is a real possibilty the BNP will get a seat.

If you don't vote you are kind of complicit in any victory they have.

so VOTE VOTE VOTE

the polls are open til 10pm
if you forgot to send a postal vote you can hand it in to the polling station.

I've already cast my vote but that votematch link from noonki is great - I'd never heard of the site.

Am impressed that I voted with some degree of intelligence as I did their quiz thing and it matched me with the party I voted for. I would have been a little worried if it hadn't!

Peachy · 04/06/2009 14:48

have been, took ds2 as he'soff school with bad foot and explained whole process step by step to him along with a brief history of the area (chartist area, very relevant, it's not just females should be glad they have a vote!)

I can't understand reluctance to vote.

Was a bit at someof the candidates listed- Jury arty- who the f are they? Clearly not good at candidate campaigning obviously! BNP , some Christian Evangelist group.... scary

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 04/06/2009 14:50

I am off to vote now.
With a heavy heart as did has come back to inform we that there is not - as I fondly imagined - either a Green or a Communist candidate for our local council. Looks like I will have to vote Labour after all.
Will vote Green in Euros though.

Lyra75 · 04/06/2009 14:55

Great thread. Thanks for that link to votematch - I've already voted but my husband hasn't quite decided so it might help him out.

I also took my son (22 months), but he was very impressed with democracy in action, he was just really cross that we didn't find the boat he thought we were going to.

Lyra75 · 04/06/2009 14:57

sorry, should have said was not very impressed (no wonder he didn't understand - maybe I'm not very clear in RL as well)

seeker · 04/06/2009 14:58

I am baffled by the reluctance to vote among so many younger women (And I know you're younger women because everyone's younger than me on mumsnet!)

Our freedoms are hard won, and have to be guarded and protected. We hold them in trust for our daughters.

I voted on the way to school this morning, with DS (4) in tow, giving him a long lecture on the importance of democracy. some of it must have stuck, given the subsequent conversation in the school queue:

[me to guy in school queue] -so, I've been to vote this morning

[guy in school queue] - not sure I can be bothered

[DS] well, if you don't vote, you can't complain

(you have to start brainwashing them young, you know )

BouncingTurtle · 04/06/2009 15:28

I did my postal vote last week.

bleh · 04/06/2009 15:39

Good work legalalien. Could you send your DS over to my office to guilt out my work colleagues?

Kayteee · 04/06/2009 16:01

I can't be arsed as, imo, they are all the fecking same (exept BNP) in the long run. BUT I am going to make the effort as I really think we owe it to those who fought so hard for us to have the right. So, even if you spoil your vote....do it for womankind everywhere.

Thunderduck · 04/06/2009 16:04

I want to vote and love to vote but I'm sick and doubt I'll be able to leave the house today.

ohdearwhatamess · 04/06/2009 16:15

High turnout at my polling station - 50% of those eleigible to vote had already done so at 3pm when I went along.

ohdearwhatamess · 04/06/2009 16:15

eligible

Peachy · 04/06/2009 16:18

It's not just women that have to be grateful is it? I have only boys but they need to know that men died in the fight to get peiople a vote regardless of property ownership / free ballot / payment of members.... all vitally important

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 04/06/2009 16:21

Yes absolutely Peachy. Equality of voting rights was a class thing as well as a sex thing, although it is interesting that politicians of all parties were far more willing to extend the franchise to all males than to any females.

Peachy · 04/06/2009 16:29

Oh indeed that's true but nonetheless, as a nation the vast majority of us owe our votes to a few particualrly principled souls

bumped into our local Conservative candidate and regular from the local pub, i was all 'hi, how are you? i'm so voting libdem' tense smile

and dd loves Gordon Brown (as i'm sure he'd be very grateful to know right now) so i have to pretend i voted for his party

oh the lies, oh the deceit. hey, that's politics

epithet · 04/06/2009 19:46

I've cast my vote.

Could have voted for Katie Hopkins....but didn't .

lal07 · 04/06/2009 19:46

When I went to vote the returning officer pumped up the tyres on my buggy. Marvelous service

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 04/06/2009 20:03

Epitet- likewise here no temption especially after reading the self promotion threads on here last week!!!

EightiesChick · 04/06/2009 22:07

DH and I went to vote earlier and it was very busy, much more than I remember in previous European elections. I'm hoping disgust with the 'mainstream' politicians has brought more people out to inflict a 'poke in the eye' vote, which at least might disadvantage the BNP.
